June 17. — Racing at Blue Bonnets this afternoon went on nnrter conditions that Were far from pleasant. Showers fMl at about the time that the crowd usually leaves the city for the course anil continued intermittently all afternoon. The change in the going produced numerous scratches ami In most of the races small fields went to the post. The card iu its original state was an excellent one. Besides the Jacques Cartier Stakes, there were offered as attractions a steeplechase handicap over the full course and a race for Canadian-owned horses. The Jacques Carrier Stakes resulted in an easy victory for William Walkers Centre Shot and incidentally led to a change In the ownership of the fillv. The race had selling conditions and Centre Shot was entered for ,600. James Gormley. former owner of Jeaiiettc M.. ran her up to ,000 anil when he stopped. L. C. Shobe. owner of Cloisteress. took up the bidding and carried her to ,500. at which figure she became bis property. Centre Shot has startetl four times at the meeting and has been returned the winner on each occasion. She is the holder of the American mile record and can run well in any sort of going. Walker paid Barney Schreiber ,000 for her as a two-year-old. Last year she developed into a bleeder and it was for this reason alone that Walker let her go. Pagan Bey led from start to finish and won in a canter. In his previous effort a few days back this horse was seemingly unable to raise a respectable gallop and his improvement today was startling. Autumn Girl, recently purchased by Messrs. Car ruthers and Shields, won at the first asking for lier new owners. She outclassed her field and. taking an easy lead when ready, wou under wraps. The first four races were won by favorites, all at otlds-on in the betting. Jockey Re id had two winning mounts. Joe Galteus and Autumn Girl. Goes Fast will be a starter in the Blue Bonnets Handicap on Saturday. Jockey Mclntyre will have the mount on Direct in the Hamilton Derby. D. McCarthy has been engaged to ride Desperado in the same event. The five-year-old Toddington stallion. Elllcott. ha been presented to the Canadian Bureau of Breeding by J. II. Madigan. The horse will be turned over to the bureau some time during the summer and will tie assigned to Norfolk County, Ontario. King James has been assigned top weight in the Blue Bonnets Handicap, which will be run Saturday. He is asked to shoulder 133 pounds. Fair Annie is bottom weight at 84 pounds. There are sixty-two eligihles. John Shields, who will do the training for Messrs. Carrnthers and Plielan. will leave for New York on Saturday to arrange for the shipment of seven POM CI which he has at Sheepshead Bay to Hamilton. He will race this lot under his own colors.
