ENGLANDS ORIGINAL DERBY COURSE. The first IhTby. recently discovered chronicles say. was run in IfiSi on tlie Isle of Man. on what was called I-ongness race course, and subsequently for some time on July 28. the birthday of .lames. Earl of Derby, who was beheaded in 1051. There is a race cup now in existence with this date upon it. Tlie race course of those days is part of the presen; golf links hut was in existence as late as 1855. when Lyndhurst Ogden. formerly secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club and still secretary of the Toronto Stock Exchange, had the pleasure of winning a mile foot raiv main it and carrying off the Ladle? Cup. which is still an ornament in his house on St. Albans street. Toronto. The articles for the Derln 221 years ago stipulated "that noe horse, mair or gelding be permitted to run unless foaled within the Raid Island, or in the Calfe of "Man. an Island of 751 acres to the South." The Isle of Man. by the way. was bought bv the Duke of Athol iu 1730 for B2.06fl.00t . and in 1827 was purchased bv the crown for ,oS5,72ii.
