THE PEER WINS IN CANTER PAT DUNNES CONSISTENT SON OF BATTEN TAKES DOWN ANOTHER PURSE. Madman Wing as Favorite of Handicap Feature of Card That Produces Mediocre Bacing — Turn-en Festivities Affect Attendance. Cincinnati. O.. June 22. — Small fields wore the rule »t I-atonia this afternoon and tile sport was at mediocre quality. The attendance also was below the standard, the festivities now going on in Cincinnati under the auspices of the North American Turners- Societies hrliaf held accountahle for the dwindling of racing patronage. Further inroads were made on the bankrolls of the sixteen layers that ipioliil prices, most of the winners lieing staunchly supported. .Madman succeeded in winning the three-quarters of a mile handicap, for which he was made favorite despite his having trailed home a field of four in his preceding start. He exhibited the most speed this afternoon and showed t lie way to Cymbal ami Al Mulh-r from start to finish. There was con siderable comment over the transfer of Cymbal dining the day by .1. J. Flannigau to V. K. Applegatc. and the presence of Walsh in tin- saddle on Cymbal. Flannigau. who trains for Colonel Applegatc, claimed the dots.- out of a selling race at Louisville and since then the horse has been running in his MR and colors. The judges had occasion to suspend Walsh yesterday for rough riding. The ruling bar ring him from riding for others than his contract employer prevented his acceptance of a mount for Flannigau. but the transfer permitted the boy to have the mount. Hie Peer. Pat Dunnes consistent gelding, can tered off with the purse in the fourth race. He was the shortest-priced winner of the afternoon, anil the easiest. His former stablemate. Warner Oris well, gave htm a brief argument during the Stretch drive, but falten-d Hearing the finish. Zlcnaps poor ■hewing was attributed to the heavy going. Sorrowful was backed to the exclusion of the other starters in the opening race, but was beaten in handy style by Proclsi. Sorrowful ran as if short and retired precipitately after going a good thri**- marters. Zephyr demonstrated that he is a fair colt on a wet track by impressively beating a fair field of voungsters in the second race. Woodlands, notwithstanding a poor sendoff . dasbe I into a long lead in the fifth race and won from Bosefrian. with Orlandot in third place. Jacobite made such a dismal showing in this race as to mouse unpleasant comment. The handling of Tom Holland by Heidel in the closing ra -c was not overly commendable and Meadow-grass achieved an easy victory. Jockey T. Koemer arrived today from Montreal and will lie under contract to W. E. Jopliu during ills stay here. T. W. Flynn secured a contract today on apprentice Jensen, who gave promise of developing into a fair rider while In the employ of U. Z. Do Annan on the California tracks. R. H. Bakers First Peep is reported to have liowed a tendon in her last start and. in corhse quence, will tie out of training for some time. John Hachnieister received word yesterday front Ed Maginn. who will be secretary at Port Erie. That he will arrive at Buffalo tomorrow and assume chalKe of the allotment of stable room and other matters preliminary to the oixnlng at Fort Erie.
