PIUTE WINS IN RECORD TIME P. T. CHINNS ETHELBERT COLT CAPTURES THE CANADIAN DERBY. Largest Crowd That Ever Witnessed a Race in Canada Cheers Him on to Nose VjctoryOver Michael Angelo Olambala Makes Poor Showing. - Buffalo, X. Y.. July 5. -Before the largest gathering that ever witnessed tlie running of a race in Canada, I. T. Chinns Ethelbcrt Yaqui colt, Piute, won the twelfth renewal of the Canadian Derby at Fort Erie this afternoon. It was a great crowd and an enthusiastic one. Better still, it was representative, some of tlie best families from Buffalo being, present to witness the sport, which, by the way, is1 as popular in this section as it is at Torouto. . The clubhouse verandas and tlie private boxes were filled long before tlie horses were called to the post for the opening race. The racing was of a high order throughout and the Derby proved one of the most keenly contested affairs ever run over the track. Nine of the thirteen eligihles carded went to the post. Aron-daclc Plate Glass. Donald Macdonald and T. M. Green being tlie absentees from those named over night. On the strength of his victory in the Latolila Derby and a series of highly satisfactory trials since his arrival here. Olambala- was made favorite and was heavily played by the public. He was ridden by T. Hice. a lad who was supposed to understand the colt, but Olambala proved the biggest kind of a disappointment, trailing along with the taibenders for most of the trip and finishing fifth, badly beaten off at the end. In the early running . John Madigans Slmcoe showed in front. Sinicoe led his field bv a considerable margin for about seven furlongs. Hounding the far turn Herbert shot Michael Angelo up to the leader and in a sixteenth of a mile lie raced into. a lead of a couple of lengths. Held, on the other hand, rated Piute along at an even pace and followed the leaders closely, with his mount under .slight restraint. Xot until making tlie- turn into the homestretch did he make- a move, but when lie did. Piute moved tip resolutely "and. at the eighth pole, was on almost even terms with the leader. Plnte and Micuael Angeio, fought it out through the final furlong and in the final drive Chinns colt proved, just a bit the gainer of the pair and won by a nose. It wSg,a, llCht fit. with the winner in doubt .uut.Il the official placing- was displayed. Piute and Reid wero greeted witb great enthusiasm and P. P.- Chinri was also given an ovation when he was called up by the judges to : receive the handsome bunch of American beauties that went to the owner of the winning horse. Piutes sire. Ethelbcrt. is also the sire of Sam Hildreths crack colt. Fitz Herbert. Today? winner has improved wonderfully since passing into Chinns hands and bids fair to develop Into a real gSPiU010- Tlle Derby had a guaranteed value of ,o00, which made the race well worth, striving for. Piute, in winning the race, reduced the track record for a mile and a quarter from 2:00 to2:03g- " The Cbinn stable also furnished tlie winner In the opening dash in Red Kiver. which beat At duller by half a length. Four favorites arid a well-played second choice won, the successful choices being Red River, Sal Volatile., Turf Star and Woolwinder. , John lerriss, trainer of Olambala, announced that the colt would be shipped to Sheepshead Bay Wednesday and that he would be a starter in the Lawrence Realization Stakes. He. attributed the coifs poor showing this afternoon- to the dust. Olambala broke slowly and raced in a cloud of dust the entire trip, which may have choked lilm. At all events Ferriss was satisfied that tlie colt did. not run his race. Jockey Ulentry was to have ridden Piute In the Derby, but when lie went to" weigh in It was found that he was three pounds over weight. Clilnn would not stand for the overweight and engaged Held. - It Is said that the. Canadian Racing Associations refused to grant a license to jockey George Mountain. AV. II. Fizer. for whom Mountain was- riding this spring, has arranged with J. -Mclntyre to: do his riding during the present meeting. Jack Thornby left for New York tonight with jockey Mulligan. James Milton left for Paducah, Ky., this afternoon, having been engaged to do the starting at the twenty-one days meeting that will be held a.t that point. Frank J. Bryan will be the " presiding judge.
