VERDUN WINS ANOTHER BIG STAKE. "Winner of Grand Prix Adds Prix du President to His List of Successes. Paris, Franco, July 5. Verdun. Baron Maurice de Rothschilds chcstnnt colt, which recently won the Grand Prix de Paris, added another victory to his record yesterday when he captured the Prix du President de la Republlque in a stirring contest over the Maisons-Latlitte course. W. K. Vanderbllts Sea Sick II.. winuer of the stake last year, finished second, beaten by two lengths and a half, with J. Lieuxs Moulin la Marche third. As in the Grand Prix the Vanderbilt entry was made favorite, the ruling price being 3 to 2, ami again the Americans were heavy losers, as they placed large sums in the hope of redeeming their losses of the previous Sunday at the Longchamps course, when Vanderbllts Negofol and Oversight, the favorites, were beaten .off by Verdun. Verduns price was 3 to 1. The value of the stake was 22.000. The track was guarded by troops in the expectation of a hostile demonstration by the jockeys who-went on strike Saturday, but with the exception, of an attempt to prevent the removal of the horses from the special cars, which was easily frustrated by the police, there were no. disagreeable incidents. The membership of the Stable Boys Union is now 420.
