CREEL IS IN WINNING FORM DEFEATS THE MINKS IN HANDICAP. FEATURE AT FORT ERIE. John E. McMillan, Remaining Contender, Bleeds During- Running of Race Argonaut and Laveno Take Races iriWhich Favorites .Fail. Buffalo, N. Y., July 22. Threatening weather, culminating in a light rain, detracted considerably from the sport at Fort Erie this, afternoon. The attendance, however, was of good proportions and speculation was brisk. The field for the mile and a sixteenth handicap was reduced to three starters, with speculation divided between The Minks and Creel. John E. McMillan, the other starter, attracted but little notice. Creel, under a light impost, made the others look cheap as he went into a long lead from the start. Although The Minks" made a game bid after the first half had been traversed, he weakened in the stretch and Creel won as his rider pleased. John E. McMillan, after being a forward contender Ju the early stages, suffered a hemorrhage and was pulled up at the stretch turn and led off the track, thereby forfeiting third money. In the opening dash, for maiden fillies, twelve started, and under the good handling that Davenport gave Fair Louise she was able to get up in time to beat out Polly Lee, the early pacemaker. There was a big plunge on Charmian iu this race, but a poor send-off and incompetent handling accounted for her failure to run up to a fast preliminary trial. Davenport followed up his initial success by landing Argonaut winner- in the second race over Clois-teress. Argonaut showed considerable improvement over his previous out when ridden by Mentry. The latter jockey is coming in for a good deal of adverse criticism on account of his faulty riding. Bob R. was considered best in the third race, but, after being in forward contention for five furlongs, he retired and left Laveno, Fearnaught II. and Brevite to fight it out. They finished in the order named. Sal Volatile found conditions exactly to her liking in the sixth race and sprcadeagled her opposition, winning by a big margin from Dareington, with Dainty Dame third. On her showing today it is patent that Dainty Dame is iu poor form and in need of a rest. The race for Dominion-breds thoroughly demonstrated Caper Sauces superiority over Cannie Maid. It was the third meeting of the pair and Caper Sauce has been the victor In each instance. Bilberry, one of the starters in this race, stumbled soon after the start and threw Guy Uurns heavily.- Pat Dunne scored his initial victory of the meeting when The Peer beat. Belle Scott and Mystifier in the closing race. It was a lucky win, as Mystlfier was best and fwlth a good ride would have been tha winner. T. jr.. Green was excused from starting In the sixth race on account of having gotten out of his stall in some mysterious manner during the night. He was pretty well skinned UP from contact with a ifenco before discovered by early rising stably bands. , .1 .W. Colt was a visitor here this afternoon. He will ship his entire band of steeplechasers to Saratoga next week. . Jockey Crowley Is an" nddltioS to the riding ranks. He came from, Ncfw York andPis under contract to S. J. Kirkman. J. II. Woodford! was among the arrivals today from Kentucky. Toe Yeager Is again showing good form In picking winners and has been a steady winner, operating from the ground. L. A. Cella returned today and will remain until next Saturday. There is very little interest manifested In the coming Do Lorimer Park meeting in Montreal, arid tho better class of horsemen are frowning on the scheme. Guy Burns was badly shaken up by his tumble from iBillierry. The horse struck him a glancing blow in the head and he had to cancel his remaining engagements for the day.
