ALLEGED CHEATING SCHEME UNEARTHED. Detroit. Mich.. August 4. If the convictions of several owners and trainers are correct, a most ingenious scheme to destroy the winning chances of likely contenders in races in Canada has been unearthed. According to report, since the inauguration of racing at Hamilton this spring, several horses have been the victims of a "night rider." It is alleged that a stable -hand formerly employed by R. F. Carman and John Dixon lias taken advantage of the absence of watchmen or other stablemen and on sundry occasions has taken out of their stails during the night horses that have boon reckoned upon as serious contenders in their respective races on the morrow. The horses were galloped into exhaustion, it is claimed, before they were returned to their stalls. The first of these midnight rides is said to have occurred at Hamilton, with Turf Star the alleged victim. Since then T. M. Green. Creel and Hyperion II. are thought to have been victims. Further claim is made by a prominent trainer that while at Fore Erie unknown parties came to him with a proposition that if he could induce some bookmaker to lay against Star Wave tlie colt would be taken out of his stall during the night and ridden into exhaustion. The trainer immediately informed owned Dyment of the proposed scheme and Dynieiit had an extra watch put on the stable. Meanwhile the object of all the suspicion has departed from here.
