, CENTEE SHOT BACK TO FORM FLEET DAUGHTER OF SAIN WINS IN TRACK RECORD TIME AT WINDSOR, Well Backed Despite Her Recent Mishap and Finds it Easy to Vanquish Colloquy and Other Speedy Sprinters in Handicap. Detroit. Mich.. August 4. Tlie Ontario Handicap, for two-year-olds, at five furlongs, was the feature today at Windsor from a monetary point of view, but the sprint hajidicap which followed held keener interest, as the pick of tlie sprinters in these parts were engaged. It was an exciting contest from barrier rise to the linisli. The other races also served to keep the big crowd well entertained. Tlie stake went to the Valley Farm Stahles Ladv Sybil, -which ran coupled with English Esther. The pair ruled favorite and came in for substantial hacking. The winner was favored by clear sailing, which contributed largely, to her victory. Patsalaga and Turf Star, tlie placed horses behind the winner, both suffered severely from interference and would certainly have been much closer up with a clear course. The handicap presented a dillicult problem to the bettors, as at the weights it looked to be an open affair. The close of the betting found Centre Shot a slight favorite over the recently arrived Colloquy, with the J. C. Milam pair, Merrick and Ada Meade, next in favor. The finish found them in the order named. Colloquy dominated the early running, Willi Centre Shot her closest attendant. At the stretch turn, the latter moved up with a rush and a sixteenth out had the race well in hand. The bookmakers were given a severe drubbing in the fifth race, in which a mediocre baud was opposed to tlie once good, racer, Comity Clerk. R. L. Thomas and his connections backed him persistently and forced Ills odds down from 8 to 1 to half that figure at post time. He was much the best, and, after indulging Boeina with the lead for the first three-quarters, came away to win as his rider pleased. Ixu Marion, trainer for the St. James Stable, bid him up 00 from an entered price of like amount in retaliation for Thomas bid up of Woolwinder at Fort Erie. The horse was protected and retained. J. S. Hawkins landed his first purse since his invasion of Canada this season, when Lotta Creed took the opening dash in a spirited drive with Mae Ileu-i ley. Arionette, t backed into odds-on favoritism, was best-of those starling in the second race and led throughout. Injury took second place -from Dare-iugtou. Youthful. Minot and Johnny Blake fought It out in the sixth race and they finished in that order, noses separating the first two. Pedro, another well-supported choice, narrowly escaped defeat in the closing dash, Lauignn foreing him out to the last ounce to get home a scant head In advance. Lanigau made an unexpectedly smart showing, and for a period threatened to make a runaway of it, but Pedro caught him a sixteenth out and outgamed him to the finish. Procla was a close third. Keiiorts from iDelorimier Park are to 1Iio effect that the meeting there is of the rag-tag variety, and doubt is expressed of its continuation for more than a week. L. O. Ix;e has disposed of his good youngster. Penn, to J. W. Schorr. "Cone" Austin, the well-known layer, suffered an accident which will prevent him from booking for several days. He dislocated his shoulder as a result of slipping from a streot car. Mark Boasberg. who has been denied the privileges of the recognized tracks in Canada on account of his connection with Dufferin Park, has been restored to good standing and was in line this afternoon quoting prices. The feud lietwoon R. L. Thomas and I. II. Wheat-croft, owner of the St. James Stable, promises to be a lengthy one. and winners of selling races from the above owners respective stables will probably hereafter come in for prompt raises.
