, MILES RUN IN 1:39 OR BETTER THIS YEAR x, A, Not many years back a mile run in 1:40 was considered close to the extreme of sliced, but it is so commonplace now that it is hardly considered fast running. The standard has been advanced until it requires something a fraction better than 1:38 to excite any general interest and comment. The first mile in 1:38 was run so recently as in lJOO. It was thought to Im a jvonderfnl tiling then, and so it was. Hut so radical has been the improvement in track surfacing for speed that since then twenty-six other horses have covered a mile in ex actly 1:38. and twenty-eight others have scored record faster than 1:38. Centre Shot is now the record holder, with l:37i as his credit mark. Next are Dick Welles. Kiamesha, Fern L.. Croon Seal and Ilarrigaii, with records of 1:37s each. Those which have run a mile in 1:373 are Charles Edward, Wes. Killcman, Rapid Water. Acrobat. Hen Trovato. Fitz Herbert. Delhi, Vox Populi, Inquisitor.. Priscillian, Allan-a-Dale, Angelus, Dig Chief, John Carroll, Animus and Maltbie. Orbicular, Lisaro. Old Timer. Krigadior and Dandelion are those with records of 1:37J. Fitz Herbert and Old Timer made their records when two-year-olds, and are the only horses of that age which ever ran a mile in better time than 1:38 in this country. The racing of this year has brought its due grist of additions to the list of horses that lrave run a mile In 1:30 or letter. As might have been ex-TKoted, the niarvelously fast Santa Anita tracK contributed the majority of the new records, forty of the forty-nine having been made there. The time of the year when horses are at their liest has now arrived, and in the course of the next six weeks of racing in the east it is reasonable to anticipate that some rapidly run miles will go on record.
