T : r THE ALABAMA STAKES TODAY The lirst running of the Alabama Stakes took place in 1S72. when it was won by the elder August Belmonts good filly. Woodbine, subsequently the dam of the very fast horse. Forester, winner of the Withers Stakes and Belmont Stakes In 1882. Mr. Belmont also won the raw; in 187Ii with Olitipa and in 1S77 with Susquehanna, lwilh daughters of Leamington and cafiital race mares. Regardless, which won in 1874. and Merciless, which won in 1870, were sisters, iKith being by Eclipse, from the famous broodmare. Barbarity, which was also dam of the great race mare. Ruthless. The latter ranks with the best of her sex and mav never have had a superior among American race mares. Later on the Alabama was won by such stars as Tcrida. Clidelia. Thura, Miss Woodford, Bella IS., Princess Bowling. Sallie McClelland. Morning-side, Beldame. Tradition and Running Water. These were all grand mares, Tiiora. Miss Woodford and Beldame being strictly first-class race horses. Like most of the Saratoga stakes, while the track was under the control of C. Walbauui. the Alabama was discontinued for a time and was not run from 1S03 until 1001. Last year the good lilly. Stamina, finished lirst. but was disqualified, which gave Mayliehl the race and Mr. John Sanford his second Alabama Stakes, his Konnyetto having won the event the year before. Considering that Mayliehl won no other race last year, she can bo safely credited with lielng its most lucky winner. In all, the record of this afternoons chief race is as follows: Year. First.
