PEINCE IMPERIALS ESSEX JOHN MARKLEINS COLT SHOWING IMPROVED FORM ON CANADIAN CIRCUIT. Packs Top Weight to Well Earned Victory in Windsor Stake Emperor William Continues His Successful Career. Detroit, Mich.. August 18. John Markleius good colt. Prince Imperial, earned tlie right to be classed with the top-notch juveniles on this circuit by a brilliant showing this afternoon in the Essex Handicap, in which the liest two-year-olds in Canada contested. His recent victory kas sufficiently impressive in the estimation of the handicappers to warrant an equal impost with Donau at top weight. Speculators, however, did not share in this belief, for the Marklein colt was practically neglected, except for a stable commission. Donau and Eye White being the ones preferred. Donau acted fractiously at the IKist and delayed the start nine minutes, but after the rise of the barrier he went into the lead, closely pursued by the Finer representative. This order was maintained for three furlongs. Then Prince Imperial joined issue, and. after a spirited drive, wore his opposition down to win rather handily. Eye White lost some ground entering the stretch by a wide turn and was a sufferer from interference when Prince Imperial swerved against him in the final furlong. He held Donau safe, however, for second place. Donau quit badly after going a half and Is far from bis best form. This was the-second running of tlie Essex Handicap, the brief history of which is- as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. IOCS Richard Reed ..UK .T.W.Mphy ,150 1:01 1000 Prince Imperial. .lis .Men try ... 1.500 l:o:! Barney Scbreibers Emperor William, which lia been showing steady improvement since Ids arrival here, took the mile dash in commanding stvle from a good band, including Tremargo and Alice. Iu contrast to the tactics employed in previous races. Emperor William was kept under sharp restraint during the earlier stages of the race and when called on came away to a handy, victory. Tlie opening dash, in which a cheap band of maidens started, enabled Fred Foster and his connections to make a clean-up with Wineberry. Foster had not figured prominently since bis return from Germany. Merman finally landed a purse for William Shields when that youngster led home ten others in tlie second race. Merman was the smartest-backed favorite of tho afternoon. The chief disappointment in a betting, way was " Light Blue, the odds-on favorite in the sixth race. Ho succumbed after going seven furlongs of the mile and a sixteenth journey. Pedro took the purse in a romp, with the outsider. Vesme, second. !Many Colors relished tlie going better than any of those that started in the fifth race and came into the easiest victory of the afternoon. Punky. in the closing race, was another neglected one to score an easy victory after leading throughout. Tom Holland lauded second place from Cassowary, with tlie choices, Boserrian and Billy Bodemer, just failing to place.
