ROCKY OBRIENS HOPEFUL PREPARATION. Saratoga. N. Y.. August IS. Speaking of the preparation of Rocky OBrien, winner or the Hope fill, fur that rare. Kimball Patterson, the colts trainer, said: "I hart an awful time setting my colt ready for the race. I knew I hurt a good colt, but he simply would not work. The best I could get him to do was three-eighths in 30 and three-quarters In 1:1." J. When a trainer has a horse that will not work, he lias a lot of trouble, no matter how good the horse is. I knew that a eolt that was doing three-eighths in 30 could not have a chance to keep up witlv colts that would burst out and go Hit tirst three-eighths in 31, so I concluded to rare him. "I hail a race picked out for him at Empire City, but it rained the day before It was run and I did Hot even enter him. I started him twice here and lie quit in Irotli. races. It made me mud when I taiv him quit that way. and I decided, to be severe with him. oven If I took a chance of breaking him down. I had no mercy on him and nearly knocked the life out of him. He stood up under what I made him do. and thats why lie won the Hopeful. I was anxious to win that race, knew he had a great chance If be -would only get in shape, and de termiued to get him ready or kill hint. He was ready. You can, bet he will remember the treatment he got. In the Futurity h- will have to carry ,1311 pounds. That is "a lot for a little horse to pack, but I must try and shape him to have a chance for that event." I
