HAWTHORNE TRACK RECEIVING ATTENTION. Course Being Fut in Condition for Racing in Connection with Labor Day Ficnic. For some days, former alderman Tom Carey, the new master of Hawthorne, has had a force of men at work on the Hawthorne track, getting it into condition for a union labor outing on Labor Day. September 0. The track itself has been cleared of tin; rank growth of weeds witii which it has been infested for several years. Its surface has been thoroughly and carefully harrowed, so that today it is in virtually as good condition as in the days when famous thoroughbreds strove over it for glory anil rich purses. The entrance to the grandstand, which was damaged by fire shortly after the track closed its gates several years ago. has been restored and the entire plant is receiving attention wherever the same is required. Part of the work that is being done is the reshingling of some of the stables, most of which remain in good condition. The Labor Day outing at the track will bo under the auspices of the Carpenters Executive Council of Cook County, witii the endorsement of the Federation of Labor. Five running races for thoroughbreds will be the chief feature of the occasion. In addition, there will be foot races, wrestling, boxing, tug of war. automobile racing and other forms of entertainment. Tom Carey is in charge of the thoroughbred racing program.
