The two races were in the ownership of Tommy Griffin, who had taken .her and Trance, among others, to the coast. He sold her after her second success to A. Koonigs-berg and retained Trance, a procedure that subsequent happenings showed should have been reversed. Her new owner took her up to Oakland and started her in tlie Gunst Stakes February 15. At the end of the half mile of the race she was first by three lengths in 4S. with Ocean Maid second. Itubia Grnnda third and three others unplaced. March IS she won a purse at a half mile in 47. and in do-ing-so. made a new track record. She then met leer first defeat when tho crack colt, Lee Hose, finished in front of her in the Hell Stakes at four and a half furlongs, run in the fast time of 5I!i. Both carried 118 pounds, so she was giving away her sex allowance to the winner. Del Crnzador was third and seven others ran unplaced. Her next race was for the Cebhard Handicap, the richest stake for two-vear-nlds of California racing. Here, she had revenge on Lee Hose and gave Trance ten pounds and a beating besides, she having up 118 pounds, Lee Kose 124 and Trance 110. She ran the live-eighths of tlie race in 1:00. beat Lee Rose by a head and Trance was six lengths away. It was a .line race and in view of the subsequent career of Trance in the east, emphasized tlie high class of Rose shewas taken to Seattle after the close of racing at Oakland. Her first start there was for a purse at four and a half furlongs June 24. which she won in 54. witii Aks-Ar-15en second and Traffic third. June 27 she was started in the ,500 Ladies Plate, at four and a half furlongs, and finished first in 5.!, bur was disqualified for a foul and placed third to Lee Hose and Righteasy. After that she was turned out and not taken up until the Oakland meeting of WOS-9. began. Hero, although starting frequently, she raced unsuccessfully for quite a time and seemed decidedly out of form. It was not until February 10 that she won a race and then she managed to defeat Herry Maid at three-quarters in 1:15s over a heavy track. Her general racing had been such tiiat 25 to 1 was laid against her when she started for the California Oaks February 27. She rebuked this slight by winning all the way to tlie chagrin of her owner, who had a solid wager on tlie favorite. Bubbling Water, having, only backed his own filly to show.
