FORT ERIE MEETING ENDS CHANGING TRACK CONDITIONS BRING UPSETS ON CLOSING DAY. Barney Schreibers Sager Wins Stako Feature of Card at Dong Odds L. A. Johnson Takes Down Two Purses. - Buffalo, N. Y., September 4. Racing for this season terminated at Fort Erie today, under conditions rather adverse for the sport and which inarred what otherwise might have been the banner day in point of attendance in the history of the traei.- A steady rain during the morning brought about changed track conditions, accounted" for frequent upsets and depleted the originally small fields. Many of the carded starters were handicapped by the going. The Iroquois Hotel Stakes, for two-year-olds, having a net value of ,150, went to the extreme outsider. Sager, which ran In remarkably improved form over previous essays. The disappointments of the race were Eye White and Galvesca. which had been given confident support on the theory that they had. the race between them. The choices were not serious factors in the running. Forez took command soon after the start and led until passed by Sager inr the last furlong. Forez had no difficulty to retain second place. Eye White retired from serious contention early and had to bt driven hard near the end to outstay the added starter. Good Intent, for thii;d money. Johnson" were eminently successful during the afternoon, each stable taking down a pair of the purses and finishiug second in the other-races with their respective representatives. Kid. which Sam Louis recently purchased from R. "L. Thomas, caused the first upset by romping away with the purse in the opener, for which Woolcastu was an odds-on choice. The latter failed to get any portion of the purse, Lotta Creed and Laveno placing behind the winner. Hyperion II.. by leading all the way in the second, inaugurated the Johnson successes. Sewell found the going to his liking and led a good baud to the finish in the sprinting handicap after a strenuous stretch drive. Ail Red just managed to beat Merrick for second place, with Madman and Little Osage close up. The mile and an eighth handicap that followed the stake race was taken by L. A. Johnsons latest acquisition, Tom Hayward, after a gruelling drive to wear down the suddenly Improved Ozana. Old Honesty was the only other starter in the race. II. O. Bedwell took down Ids usual dally purse when The Wrestler made a show of his opposition in the mile and three-sixteenths race, for which Flora Riley was the choice. The Fizer fillv was never equal to the task of heading The Wrestler and trailed him for the entire distance. Cooney K. wound up the racing here by romping home tin? winner of the closing dash in advance of Ben Double, the favorite. fAfter the victory of The Wrestler. William Done-hue, acting for J. S. Ward, bid him up 00 over his entered price. II. G. iBedwell retained the torso. The judges disallowed the protest of J. A. Strode that the claim of his tilly by S. J. Ward, owner of RIeta, was irregular. Strode will appeal from the decision to the Canadian Racing Associations.: W. A. Burttscliell purchased the contract on J. Wilson this morning, and that rider piloted Kid and Cooney K. to victory and finished second on Forez iu the stake. Wilson gives promise of developing into a skillful rider. , W. II. Fizer has changed his plans of shipping direct to Louisville and will try for purses on tin? New York tracks, whither he will ship his race?s tomorrow night. E. W. Maginn, who acted as secretary hero this season, departed tonight for his home in St. Louis. L. A. Cella and John Condon, who came here to attend the annual meeting of the Niagara Racing Associations stockholders, were visitors at the track today. It was Mr. Condons first trip to Fort hrie and lie was much impressed with what he learned regarding the plant. A preliminary meeting of the directors was held this morning, but the real business was left over for the night session. It was announced that no changes in otticers would be made for ttie present. Messrs. Cella and Condon departed for their respective homes late tonight. Special trains left tonight for Montreal, carrying most of the race followers who had been here since the opening of the meeting.
