THIS IS ST. LEGER WEEK IN ENGLAND. The Doncaster September meeting takes place this week. It ranks only second to the Epsom Summer meeting and has the decision of the St. Leger as its feature of greatest importance. If Minoru should succeed in winning it and become a triple crown winner, every loyal Britisher would rejoice mightily for King Edwards sake, but it is not believed by racing experts that he can defeat Bayardo. But the St. Leger is not the only high-class attraction of the meeting. The Champagne Stakes, for two-, vear-olds, takes place on the first day of the meeting, Tuesday. It Is a dash of five furlongs and 132 yards, at 00 each, with ,000 added, and is viewed with muclu interest, for the reason that it bas no penalties or allowances and affords an opportunity for the crack two-year-olds to meet on equal terms. Tressady, Galatine. Charles OMalley. Lemberg. Admiral nawke, Neil Gow and John Splendid, the very pick of the English two-year-olds, are sill in the Champagne, as are also the American Troubled Waters. Lyndin, Metaphor, Whiskbroom and Top o the Morning; in fact, Mr. Keene bas eight nominations and Mr. Whitney six. Since Whiskbroom defeated Galatine at the York nieeting Americans will not unnaturally hope he will make a creditable showing In competition with Lemberg. Charles OMalley and Admiral Hawke. The St. Leger will be run Wednesday afternoon and the horses deemed likely to run are Minora. Mirador. Maid of the Mist. Diamond Stud. Valens, Bayardo, Strickland, St. Victrix, The Story. Esperanto, Carrousal. Bachelors Double, Prester Jack, Phaleron. Louviers, Rrooklands, Boniba and Electric Boy, and of these it Is thought Bayardo, Minoru and Louviers will fight out the finish. The Portland Plate. Alexandra Plate. Rous Plate and Scarborough Stakes will lie the principal races of Thursdav. The first two closed for entries August 3, and the weights have not been received in this country as yet. The Rous Plate is for two-year-olds, at three-quarters of a mile, and Mr. Belmonts Merrv Task, Mr. Carrolls Washoe, Mr. Keenos Lyndin. Metaphor and Infatuation and Mr. Whitneys Hamburg Blue Girl colt and Hamburg York-viile Belle colt are among its nominations. The Scarborough Stakes is for three-year-olds at a mile, and Mr. Keenes Wedding Bells, Esperanto and AVamba and Mr. Whitneys Field Daisy are- engaged. The Drtneaster Cup at two miles and an eighth. Prince of Wales Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds, Doncaster Stakes for three-year-olds and Park Hill Stakes for three-year-old fillies are the big races of Fridav. No Americans figure in any of these, except the Prince of Wales Nursery. Many olher stakes of recent closing are on the meetings program, in which the American owners have no doubt made entries. Besides the racing, the Doncaster sales of yearlings are of high interest. The most select breeding studs of England sell their yearlings here and, with Imycrs from all racing countries present In eager competition for choice offerings, the highest prices of the year are usually realized.
