JAMESTOWN MEETING OYER CHARITY BENEFITS FROM CLOSING DAYS RACING AT VIRGINIA COURSE. ! Two Purses and a Percentage of the Receipts Donated to- Charitable Institutions Meeting . Most Successful in History of Track. Norfolk, Va., April 2G. The most successful meeting over given by the Jamestown Jockey Club came to a close with tlie running of todays pro gram. The day was a perfect one for outdoor sport and a record-breaking crowd turned out. Tlie management set aside twenty per cent, of the receipts for charity. The card was made up of eight races, one of which was for gentlemen riders. This race was not run under the auspices of the Jamestown Jockey Club. A committee of the citizens of Norfolk had the affair in charge and no betting was posted. The winner turned up in Fire Alarm, whieli made a runaway affair of it, winning easily from Jim. The feature race, a handicap at five and a half furlongs, brought out a- smart field, afnong them that good racer, Sir John Johnson, making his first appearance in a couple of months. -Sir John Johnson had earned many friends by his great performances in the past and it was more a matter of sentiment than for. any other reason that the public accepted a short price against his chances. Phil Goldstein had tlie mount, and but for sharp interference which ho suffered when ho attempted to squeeze through along the rail in entering the home stretch, ho would have won. At the time of the mishap he was moving up courageously and looked a certain winner. Forest Rose furnished the victor in Montcalm, which by tlie way, is a half-brother to Sir John Johnson, both being out of La Tosca II. If Frank Nolan starts Sir John Johnson at Pimlico, this really good racer will show his heels to better horses than those which finished in front of him this afternoon. The Rose stable also furnished another winner dudS4hp, altWJioon in The Golden Butterfly, whieli useful plater took the Charity Purse, which served as tlie opener. The added money in this race was donated by the owner of the winner to the fund which will be contributed to local charitable institutions. Aluskmelon and Arany were the winning favorites. Tlie latter just did manage to last long enough to beat Bait a nose in his race, while Muskmelon found the task of beating tlie lot pitted against her in the seventh race an easy one. Several horses changed hands during the afternoon. Sam Louis purchased Lawton AViggins nt private sale after his race for 50. J. G. Wagnon purchased Semi-quaver of John W. Pangle and James Bolarid bought Abound of R. T. Wilson. A few of the stables racing here will ship direct to Toronto, but tlie majority will go to Pimlico. Tom Hatfield will go to Louisville.
