FAST TIME .AT LOUISVILLE ADAMS EXPRESS REDUCES CHURCHILL DOWNS MILE RECORD TO 1:37. T. M. Green Had Made New Mark of 1:38 Earlier in Day Stone Street Runs Mile and an Eighth in Track Record Time. Louisville, Ky., September 27. Little Fathers track record of 1:381 for oue mile, established at Churchill Downs yesterday, did not stand lg. ll was twice bettered in the course of this afternoons lacing, and the end of the program found the mark for the distance reduced to 1:37s. only a fraction, removed from the American record of 1:371, established by Centre Shot at Santa Anita Park, December 22, VMS. The Churchill Downs course is in such a lightning-fast condition that it would be no surprise should the American record for the mile he reduced, before the present meeting is over. The first reduction of the record came in the third race, when T. M. Green, making his first start since the Latonia summer meeting, ran the distance in 1:38, defeating the crack. Prince Ahmed, himself a record breaker at this meeting. T. M. Greens record was destined to be short lived, for in the fifth race, which, by the way, was a split of the third race, II. C. Hallenbecks Adams Express, third choice In the betting, ran the mile in 1:37s. and It was the general impression that had he been urged he would have equaled, if not surpassed, the American record of 1:371. The old Kentucky Derby winner, Stone Street, also came into the limelight by running a mile and an eighth in 1:511, which equated the track record made last year by Carlton !. Follie Levys three-quarters in 1:11s was also a noteworthy achievement from a time standpoint. Aside from the fast time recorded in all the races, the sport was highly exciting and immensely enjoyed. Favorites were returned -winners in three of tin; races, and as all of the best backed horses .were contenders throughout the afternoon, they got some portion of the purses. Supporters of the iihort-prieed ones had a profitable day of it. j The finish in the third race bordered on the sensational, T. M. Green and Prince Ahmed, after liav-. ing raced most of the time on even terms, began a furious drive in the stretch. They measured strides almost until the last sixteenth, where Prince Ahmed began boring out and it was the main cause for his defeat, as T. M. Green kept" straight to the finish and won by a nose. Helmut made a grand showing by landing in third place after closing an immense gap. Nimbus, considered a dangerous contender, was forced to retire early from the contest, due to having been taken with a hemorrhage. The erratic Donau was in the main responsible for the record-breaking performance in the fifth race, as be forced a terrific pace for the first three-quarters. This benefited Adams Express, which was held under restraint until the Gerst racer tired. On Douaus retirement. Adams Express moved into the lead like a Hash and he hold Swannanoa safe in the stretch. The Cowdiu filly would have been much more formidable but for a tangle at the start. The handicap at three-quarters went to Follie Levy, which "was on her best iost behavior this afternoon. She had to be hard urged to outstay Stinger, which was making his first start since the removal of the ban imposed against him for inconsistent running during the summer meeting at Latonia. He ran in the interest of II. C. Ilallenbeck this afternoon. W. G. Yauke took another purse when The Hague scored a lucky victory in the second race over Queen Marguerite. The latter was probably best, but suffered interference in rounding the first turn and was given an overconfident ride by jockey Koer-ner. F. Starita, Queen Marguerites trainer, bid up the winner from an entered price of 1911.sh00 to 1911.sh00, lint failed to get her. The maiden race which opened the iiragram, brought an upset by the easy win of C. L. Harrisons Bonanza. Jockey Taplins energetic handling was responsible for Stone Streets victory in the closing dash over Sam Barber and Crow Robb. Phil Hyanis was among todays arrivals from ftw York and announced to the horsemen that the Git-tins bill would surely come up in the New York Assembly. It is generally regarded in the east that the" measure will succeed in going through the house and will receive the approval of Governor Dix. Messrs. H. K. Knapp and F. R. Hitchcock have returned to New York, but will return to Kentucky for the Latonia meeting. John C. Ferriss will ship a string of racers to Mexico City at the close of the local meeting. Col. T. .ll L. Brown, who served as presiding judge at Tampa and Pensacola, was among todays visitors. Col. Matt J. Winn receievd a telegram today from Senor De la Arena, who is interested in Mexican racing, to the effect that he would arrive here on Saturday next. James Butler and Price McKinney, who are also identified with Mexicau racing, will arrive here next week, and plans for the coming Juarez racing will be fully discussed and announced to the horsemen. There will he 10O days of racing at Juarez and probably thirty days of spring racing at Mexico City. Most of. the cheaper horses that trainer W. II. Karriek has in charge will be offered at auction ltiring the Latonia meeting. Presumption will return here after filling his engagement in a stake race at Woodbine on Saturday next. Secretary Jasper is arranging t for a special race designed to bring together the best sprinters at the course. A liberal purse will be provided by the management and it will lie added to the regular card f six races. Owners will be consulted regarding conditions. Donau, after his bad lehavior at the post today, was again placed on the schooling list. Col. Jack Chinn. John Pay and Jake Marklein were among todays visitors. It practically has been settled that William Shelley will leave for Mexico City at the close of the racing here to begin getting things in condition for the seventocn-days meeting at the Mexican capital preceding the opening of Juarez. Mr. Shelley will also serve as presiding judge. Recent work-outs at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park: Acgiiin Half mile in 51, first three-eighths in Al Aiullor Quarter mile in 25, cantering.
