HORSES WORKING OVER LAUREL TRACK. Laurel, Md., September 27. Another lot of horses arrived at Laurel yesterday from Baltimore, numbering fourteen. These horses were in three stables. Fred Musante came over with one, M. Kelly with three, and Ernest Utterback with ten. The last named string includes a likely lot, which have been given a rest and are now ready for hard work. Among those in the Utterback string are Hedge Rose, Black Brunch, Wenna. Mollie S., Royal Onyx, Feramorz, .Teannette B. and Margaret Alice. James Bass came in from Sheepshead Bay with Ilibernica. Others are to ship from that point tomorrow, according to Mr. Bass, who states that the horsemen are evincing keen interest in the Laurel meeting. Owners everywhere are well pleased witli the book of the meeting. There is more added money for the horsemen at Laurel than offered at any racetrack for some time past. Jaequelinn and Helen Barbee, from the stable of W. T. Anderson, were worked through the stretch yesterday morning. The track is faster than was looked for. Hugh Penny worked King Avondale a half mile in 53. with something left. Third Kail, Wood Dove and Thrifty were given useful gallops. The horses owned by R. D. Williams were also given useful work. Donald Macdouaid was sent the circuit of the track. This was the first work over the full mile course. This good horse was troubled with bad legs for a long time, and was looked on as ready to break down at any time. His rest the past summer seemingly has done hiin much good, and he probably will be a factor in the events in which lie starts during the Laurel meeting. The three-year-old filly Darling has developed size and shows much early speed. She went three-eighths yesterday in 40. The work at the track is being rushed along even faster than it was last week, and an extra force of workmen have been obtained in order to fiuish by-Friday at the latest. The "filling in and grading of tlie space between the grandstand and the outside fence of the track was commenced yesterday morning, and tonight it was completed. The work on the overhead bridge from the platform at which the race trains will arrive "has been started. This will enable patrons to walk from the trains to the grandstand without stepping on the road. Weights for the Maryland State Fair Inaugural Handicap, .,500 added, for 3-year-olds and over, one mile, to be run Monday. The 700 stalls that will be available will accommodate all the horses that are likely to como hero to race from October 2. to 31. The greater part of the stables have been applied for and allotted, hut all coiners will be looked after by the association. Manager Brown will welcome all horses or horsemen in good standing with the governing bodies and will provide accommodations for them all. There are a number of. steeplechasers that were not named for the stakes that will be brought to Laurel. Some of the owners of these horses have visited the track and are well pleased with the steeplechase course. The last jump is placed so that it will give the horses a long run through the stretch.
