RACES ARE RUN IN THE RAIN MUD RUNNERS GET THEIR FIRST OPPOR ¬ TUNITY AT NORFOLK TRACK Frank E Brown Breaks Long Spoil of 111 Luck When WhenVolthorpo Volthorpo Wins the Jamestown Handicap Juvenile Race Hotly Contested Norfolk Va April 12 The Jamestown Jockey Club provided its patrons with a sevenrace pro ¬ gram for the closing Saturday of its spring meet ¬ ing Besides the Jamestown Hhmllcup a dash of one mile value 1000 there was provided as all additional attraction the Country Club Steeplechase in which six jumpers went to the post Despite i steady downpour of rain the attendance was good although the moisture undoubtedly kept ninny at home It was the first opportunity that the mud run ¬ ners haddurliig the meeting and that the public had u good line on the horses that favored that sort of going was shown by the afternoons results five of the seven purses going to the favorites favoritesThe The twoyearold nice furnished the best contest of the lay four of the ten starters fighting it out through the homestretch and finishing heads apart The steeplechase also furnished an interesting con ¬ test although the general opinion was that tho best of the contestants did not win Nottingham well ridden by Harvey Boyle beat Julia Armour a head with Sanclim third beaten a length for second place The lastnamed closed with a belated rush and had Allen got him going well early in the struggle he might have won wonFrank Frank E Brown who had more than his share of bad luck since leaving here last fall furnished the winner of the Jamestown Handicap in Volthorpe The latter was a wellbacked favorite and lie made a runaway affair of tlie race Schuttinger took rio chances and when the barrier was released he rushed Yolthorpe into tlie lead and kept him in front during the remainder of the trip The finish for second place in the race won by Uye Straw was exceedingly close iRtween Grosveiior Theo Coolc and Cherry Seed which jmssed the judges in tho order apartTliere named noses apart Tliere were no runups this afternoon although several of the races were selling affairs Neither was there any claiming W E Burke has taken over the horses Baton aijl Coeur dAleiie for L Most and will ship them to Canada to race on the Canadian circuit Burke Is also making jockey Bobbins engagements engagementsLarry Larry Carey Acting for H G Bedwell disposed of the sprinter Uose Queen to J U Bagley this morning Uose Queen is intended for racing over the halfmile tracks and will be shipped to Mon ¬ treal at the conclusion of tliis meeting meetingJockey Jockey J Wilson left for Charleston yesterday On Monday he will be married to Miss Margaret McAllister at St Marys church in Charleston bv the Rev Father Kraft Frank Ortell will be best man Wilson has signed to ride for Thomas F Sheedy this year aud will report to trainer A G Blakeley at Havre de Grace some day next week weekW W It Engstrom who is making one of the big ¬ gest books at Jamestown will book at Havre de Grace Engstrom has a big following among race ¬ goers of the present day and makes a practice of taking almost anything in the way of a wager that is offered
