KENTUCKY IN FOR GLORIOUS SEASON Best Horses in Country Among Eligiblcs for Derby and 10000 Kentucky Handicap Louisville Ky April 12 Throe great racing wonts tin Kentucky Derby Kentucky Oaks anil S1000O Kentucky Handicap will be decided during the twontyflvo days of racing hero llils spring com ¬ mencing on Saturday May 10 at CUurcliill Downs anil ending at Douglas Park Saturday June 7 7The The Derby will this season bo the richest of the thirtynine renewals of that race The Oaks will be of sullicient value to make it well worth winning and Ihe Kentucky Handicap will with the excep ¬ tion of the Endurance Stakes be the richest event f the American turf for 1513 so far as is now known knownAll All of the Dcrbv horses save one or two that have dropped out of training are working for the Idg race at the various tracks where they are lo ¬ cated Several have already done trials in amazing fashion fashionLittle Little lias been learned of the exact present con ¬ dition of the eastern Kentucky Derby eligiblcs that are duo here soon to run in the rich race Among these are the ntuelitalkedof Ten Point the strongly tonlud His Majesty and that good colt Yankee Notions The latter is still at Aiken S C where trainer Win II Karrlek has the Hitchcock and Knapp horses He was expected at Lexington before this but for some reason he lias delayed coming north This sou of Yankee was a good twoyear old and while he was unequal to tho task of beating such juveniles as Hawthorn and Helios he ap parentlv held most of the other twoyearolds safe last season He is a halfbrother to Sprite which went to the post favorite for the Latonla Derby last spring which event was won by the great Free Lance LanceTen Ten Point won four races in six starts last season and is regarded by A L Aste as the best throi1 oarold lie ever owned Aste is the man who sold Nasturtium when a twoyearold to AV C Whitney for 50000 and he also owned Jack Point when that sou of Sir Dixon won the Brighton Handicap HandicapHis His Majesty won two races in six starts last sea ¬ son as a twoyearold and is highly regarded by his stable connections He is a sou of Ogdcn the sire of Sir Martin Kayette and other stake winners In Manland last fall all three of these horses were rated as of high class and great prospects for de ¬ velopment into star threeyearolds If they go to the post in the Derby they will add greatly to the interest in tin event as they all belong to turfmen who claim New York as their home homeFew Few performers have come hero from the east and been aide to win the Kentucky Derby Hindoo did but both Parole and Ruiinymede failed Vag ¬ rant a westernowned horse beat the former find Apollo which came here from New Orleans defeated the latter latterRen Ren lirush was another eastern horse lhat was successful in tho Derby but he was fortunate in not stacking up in that race against IJyron Mc Clcilands Prince Lief which defeated tho son of lTamblo in both the Oakley Derby at Cincinnati and the National Derby at St Louis It must lie admitted that neither His Majesty Ten Point nor Yankee Notions as twoyearolds showed Hie form displayed at that age by such colts as Hindoo and Hen Irusli but aside from Helios and Hawthorn they tigure as having a chanee In the coming event at the Downs which in money value will exceed that of any Kentucky Derby iu the long history of the great race raceThe The Kentucky Oaks nuver had a greater array of promising tillies entered than are engaged in this event this season which like the Derby is to be rim for the thirtyninth time timeIn In the Kentucky Handicap are entered practically every great horse now on the turf from a three yearold up The Held in this event which is to l e run on Monday May 2S is sure to be all that auy iMxly would ask both in resj ect to quality and num ¬ bers John liachmeister manager of Douglas Park feels that in offering 10000 in added money and in naming the conditions of the Kentucky Handicap In lias been generous and has established a lixturo that will endure for years to come comeThe The fact that several famous horses notably Frc c Lance will not be raced this spring will not greatly detract from the attractiveness of this really great race as those crack threeyearolds of 1912 The Manager Froglegs and Bnckhorn are all training soundly for the race It is expected that the noted liveyearold Bourbon Itean will be a participant The evergreen High Private never looked better than now at Churchill Downs John W Schorr thinks Star Charter will be as good a fiveyearold this Miring as he was a fouryearold The Kentucky Derby favorite Hawthorn is one of the most re ¬ markable horses of the season and he is engaged in tin ram In fact every high class horse of three years and upward is eligible to start startWHh WHh three Such fouryearolds as Froglogs The Manager and Ruckhorn all being especially trained for the 10000 Kentucky Handicap which will open the spring meeting at Douglas Park on Monday May 25 this event is sure to be one of the notable contests of the year in America There are many other noted horses that are being pointed by their trainers for tills rich stake Aside from the older horses the mighty Hawthorn and several other crack threeyearolds are eligible for this race which is at the same distance as the Kentucky Derby one mile and a quarter quarterThe The weights for this race will be adjusted by an able handicapper 10 W Maginn who will try to see to it that no candidate for the prize will win it without having to run every foot of the journey in track record time if weather conditions and the go Ing are favorable favorableThe The twoyearolds at the local tracks as well a at Lexington are still attracting the attention of turfmen by reason of brilliant trials These colts lillies and goldiilgs arc by long odds the most prom isihg as well as the most valuable of any band of youngsters ever handled on the Kentucky tracks Tin cost price of a number of them wouid make an ordinary man independent They are of the blood royal of both the American and English stud books booksSo So there will be nothing lacking in the way of racing material to make the local season here a huge succuss Interest was never so keen in a com ¬ ing racing season and the attendance at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park this spring is likely to lax the capacity of the two famous courses coursesThis This will undoubtedly be the greatest season of spring and summer racing ever seen in Kentucky The sport will be on a scale that seemed improb ¬ able a decade ago imH rtant as are the thorough ¬ bred interests of this commonwealth
