HAWTHORN IN SUPERB CONDITION Appearance of Kentucky Derby Favorite Exoitoa Admiration of Trainers at Louisville Louisville Ky April 12 Condilions have been unfavorable for training here during the greater part of tliis week but the horses that aro being prepared hero for Kentucky racing were so far ad ¬ vanced before the rain caused a temporary cessation of work that the setback is of less importance than it would have been under other circumstances circumstancesThe The going was slushy yesterday at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park Few horses were speeded The Kentucky Derby favorite Hawthorn after slowly loping around the course went throe furlongs in 7ni going the first eighth in 12 quarter iu 24 24Having Having a little leisure time on account of weather conditions Will MeDaniel trainer of the Derby candidate Foundation was a visitor today at the Drfwus His mission was to see C P Busehemeyers Hawthorn in action lie was reticent relative to this great gelding He admitted that the superb condition of Hawthorn was a surprise to him He said that lie was at A loss to understand how any threeyearold could remain so robust with the training to which lie lias teen subjected this spring MeDaniel told several of his friends that if Founda ¬ tion raced to his work ho was a good threeyear old He made no allusion in his talk to any comparison of the relative merits of Hawthorn and Foundation as Derbv candidates candidatesTho Tho Kentucky Oaks candidate Christmas Star in the stable of Catesby Woodtord worked well today at Churchill Downs breezing a quarter iu 25 Shelby West worked the two threeyearolds Baron de Kalb and Senator James a half in i Wr the first quarter of which they covered in 27 These performances and that of Hawthorn were the onlv ones noted threeyearold Bunch of Keys and five twoyear olds three of whicli were bred by John E Madden and the other two at the Lawrence Comstock ranch in California This indicates that His Ma ¬ jesty is being pointed for the Derby From all ac ¬ counts he Is highly regarded by his owner He is most royally bred as his sire Ogden as well as the sire of his dam His Highness were Futurity win ¬ ners and his gninddam The Buttertlios was a winner of the same rich stake Briar Path his Oaks candidate won the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs last spring and is regarded as a filly of much class classW W G Yauke the California turfman and racing partner of the Louisville turfman Col W E Applogate has arrived from San Francisco where he went from Juarez on account of the illness of his little daughter Miss Gladys Yauke The young miss is now well and accompanied the turfman and his wife to this city Mr Yanko also brought with him from California his stable jockey C Borcl who lias entirely recovered from the attack of rheumatism which afflicted him at Juarez last winter This stable has no Kentucky Derby candi ¬ date but Itorel who is a strong and vigorous rider whpn at his test is almost sure to have a mount iu the big race this spring springJ J C Calm will take his entire string to Lexing ¬ ton to race this spring as the four horses he lias in charge here are all training goal They are Mockler Skcots Rooster and George OsnariL Ihe former lias always raced well on the Kentucky Asso ¬ ciation track and last spring won two stakes there Calm has not raced Skeets since last fall He won with Rooster and George Oxnard at Juarez last lastWill Will MeDaniel the trainer of Foundation who was hero today from Lexington reports that Catesby Woodfords fouryearold Sonadu is train ¬ ing well this spring and that lie has been at the Kentucky Association course since last January He is now in the care of Howard Oots who will race him for Mr Woodford this season Sonada was one of tho winter favorites for the Kentucky Derby of 1012 but met witli training mishaps and failed to run to his best form In 1011 he was re ¬ garded us a highclass twoyearold and the veteran trainer Peter Whinner lias always regarded him as one of the best youngsters he ever handled Sonada lias not raced since last spring springJohn John Hi Morris who trained Azra the Kentucky Derby winner of 1802 and bred and raced the crack twoyearold Forward last season was at Churchill Downs today looking over the twoyearolds which are being trained for him by James S Everman Mr Morris has Six promising yearlings at his farm in Woodford County four of whicli are by the well known sire Goldcrest One is a bay colt out of Evoyln 1 by Russell Another is a chestnut colt out of Result by Compute Another a chestnut filly out of Marv Morris by Victory and another the chestnut liily out of Tardy by Lord Esterling tills mare being the dam of Dilatory Miss Cljarcot and Shirley Rossmore He also has a black filly by Char cot Kllenlle by Knight of Ellersie and a bay illy by Chureot Pretty Betty by GolUcrcst The black filly above mentioned is a halfsister to those good racers Sir Alvescot and Right and True Mr Morris lias at his farm two yearlings belonging to people well known in Louisville that he regards ns equal to any yearlings In Kentucky One is a chest ¬ nut colt by Goldcrest Mary Agnes by Powhattan This colt is owned by Mrs Joseph Neil of this city and is a halfbrother to the good filly Louise S The other is u bay colt by Goldcrest Annie Hastings by Hastings the sire of Hawthorn The latter belongs to Col John C Dnrrett formerly of this city but noV residing at Midway Ky near whicli the Morris farm isi located Mr Morris spent an enjoyable day here looking over the various stables and expressed himself as much impressed by the superb appearance of tho Derby favorite Hawthorn and remarked that the great gelding had all the earmarks of a sensa ¬ tional threeyearold He remarked as Hawthorn came on the track that lie was not unlike the pic ¬ tures of many noted Epsom Derby winners he hu l seen from time to time timeJ J H Mead is doubtful alx ut taking any of the three horses he now has at Churchill Downs to Lex ¬ ington to race tills spring Botli Capitan Bravo and Chapnltcpec are up to a race or will be when the Kentucky Association spring meeting opens Hunly while doing well now was quite a sick horse a while back and his owner doubts if lie can race him until the Latonia summer mooting This is quite a hard ¬ ship on Mead as llanly has always done his best running over the Churchill Downs track and is one horse that surely likes tho going there thereIf If E R Bradley s Brooktieid is not a starter in the Kentucky Derby this spring jockey C Gauss will have the mount in that race on G W Langdons colt His Majesty It was announced several days ago that iu the event Mr Bradley had no starter Gauz would ride Prince Hermis for Lew Marion but it appears that Cliff Hammon trainer of the Bradley string had given Langdon the call in this race on tliis crack jockeys services Ho probably will not be able to ride Briar Path the Langdon candidate iu tho Kentucky Oaks as the Bradley stable is Dint ¬ ing Benanet for that stake stakeJockey Jockey J Ioftus is expected here by J B Rcspess within the next few days Mr Respess contract with Loftus expired last December but Jt is likely if ho can keep down to a reasonable weight that Loftus will bo connected with the Stable of his old employer this season Loftns showed at Juarez last winter that his skill as a rider is even greater now that at any previous time in his career as a jockey but lie had great dilliculty in keeping down to oven reasonably light weight and 110 or 111 pounds was about the best he could do even with severe reduc ¬ ing So far there has been iiO agreement made for him to ride t F Busehemeyers noted gelding Hawthorn in the Kentucky Derby though trainer W S Trevey intimated to the noted rider last fall at Latonia that he would like to have his services for the groat race to be run hero on Saturday May 10 Hawthorn was never beaten with Loftus in the saddle E R Bradley will return here next week when he hopes weather conditions will b favorable for the thorough trying out of his bg string at Churchill Downs In the care of trainer Cliff Hnminou It will also tiiou bo decided which of the lot will be sent to Lexington to nice during the coming meeting there
