DERBY COLTS IN THE EASTER STAKES Most imiRirtant of all the races decided at Kemp ton or elsewhere on Easter Monday wa the Easter Stakes for in that wo gained no small Insight Into the classic prospects of some leading threeyearolds It Is generally accepted of course that if no mis take had teen made in Hippeastrums trials it would te impossible for any tliroeyoaivold unless keyed right up to concert pitch to give him twenty one pounds Moreover there was the uncertainty as to whether Hlpnoastrum might not even be one cf the best of the year I might say however that lie did not quite look that part A palish chestnut with flaxen mane and tall he has distinctly weak hocks that is to say so far as conformation is any guide and ho does not fill the eye as teing iu the really first class but ho is a colt of good size a fine mover and capable of much improvement He could not possibly have done his work in more hand ¬ some stylo than ho did on Monday and he must iwve rt least an outside chance for his next engagement which is the Derby He derives his eqlor from Bend Of and his maternal gramldam Iady Lovenile by Muueaster out of Nellie by Hermit It may be fairly assumed that his maternal grandsire St Simon had little to do with his composition The really fittest colt which ran in the race under notice was Kosowortliy which stripped a perfect picture hard and clean wonderfully forward indeed for the time of year Next to him as regards condition I liked Rock Flint which has grown and developed In tho recess and though very well indeed today bas still plenty of condition for his trainer to work on A sound hardy colt this and I should think just such another as his sire so far as train ¬ ing goes goesI I may state here that Rock Flint ran uncom inonly well under his big weight and stayed on better than did Saiiquhar Indeed unless I am mistaken Rock Flint was second best iu the race Now us to Sanquhar it is more difficult to express a useful opinion Clearly lie has retained his bril ¬ liant si ee l for lie looked like coming in alone up to six furloria and ho did not dwell at the start as ho used to do last year but the cdH himself has fallen away sadly about his flanks and loint Even iif his clothing I noticed tliis and 1 question whether he was as heavy as when lie last ran as a twoyearold When he was saddled the change in him was more noticeable Last year he promised to have a back almost like his sire Santry though not quite so short Now it is wasted until all sug ¬ gestion of Santry lias vanished In the circum ¬ stances he was not likely to stay out a mile and It is a great matter that his speed is unimpaired We have often seen marvelous changes come over horses after a spell of sunshine and I am very far from losing heart over Sauqnliur on account of his Kemp ton running though Rock Flints performance and condition were more promising Flippant repre ¬ sented Mr Hulton and looked all right hilt is not a top sawyer neither is Laudcs neat clean little colt though he is No Desmond of this typo has over teen very good and the same remark mav be applied to Aboyour also by Desmond On the other hand Queens Parade is a good deal like her dam Queens Holiday and slio will pay to follow Pur ¬ ple Mantle a bloodlike son of William the Third and Gabardine had a following at tho weights but Poulotte is not so g od as she ought to be from her breeding As I have already suggested the pluc ings behind the winner need not bo considered and in my judgment Kock Flint came out of the race with most credit but was far litter than Sanqnhiir to do himself justice The latter is short of strengtli at present If only lie should develop the very necessary muscular power whicli lias so con ¬ spicuously left him for tho time being lie might still teat all comers but as wo shall see Craganour at Liverpool next week it Is premature to jump to any conclusions about our threeyearolds The Special Commissioner in London Sjwrtsmun
