CHANGE FOR THE BETTER SUN SHINES ON LATONIA RACING FOR FIRST TIME DURING PRESENT MEETING. High Private Wins Autumn. Selling Stakes in Hard Drive with Flying Tom Another Purso for Cash on Delivery. Cincinnati, O.. November 1. Clear and sunshiny weather this afternoon, tlie first experienced since the fall term of racing began at Latonia, was a great factor towards the splendid patronage accorded the siMtrt. Small fields, composed of the better grade of horses now racing here, furnished excellent sport. It would have been vastly better had the track been more uniform as to tlie going. It was deep in spots, with an occasional dry strip. In the stretch a layer of sand was spread this morning on part of tlie track and this served to additionally puzzle the riders. The jockeys, in their efforts to find firm footing for their mounts, took them all over the course, resulting in frequent Interference, at times costly to those so bothered. With fair weather during the next few days the track should soon be restored to good condition. The Autumn Stakes, under selling conditions and worth .8S0 net to the winner, was won by High Private in a hard drive with the outsider, Flying Tom. Cream was third. The winner raced this afternoon in his old-time style and escaped interference by assuming a good position early in the racing. He was tiring fast in the stretch, but ids gameuess enabled him to last long enough to win out. Sleeth and Souada were both held in high esteem in the race, but both suffered keenly by interference and were never serious factors. High Private was highly regarded this afternoon and received stout support in the betting. Foreign commissions, receied just before post time, installed him as this-favorite. Jockey Goose, who had the mount on High Private, landed two other wiuners during the afternoon in John Gund and Hodge, in the two-year-old dashes that began the racing. Hodge showed an exceptionally good performance in carrying 120 pounds to an easy victory. The consistent Ocean Queen again scored handily over good opposition at surprisingly good oilds in the closing dash. Her victory was in the main due to the vast amount of ground that she saved all tlie way. Cash on Delivery -made it five straight when he took the third race from some fast sprinters. He had to bc"niuch" the"best to score, for he suffered extensively from interference and was carried to the outer rail on the stretch turn. Glint, under a good ride, accounted for the fifth race, Verena taking second place by a nose from Back Bay. A large Louisville delegation came over this morning to witness the racing. It included Gen. W. B. Haldeman, George J.- Long, W. F. Schulte, John Kline, Charles Wright and Jake Shaffer. The party returned tonight. The three-horse combination, consisting of High Private, Ocean Queen and Glint, yielded a return of 33 for , and tlie two-horse combination, composed of Hodge and Cash on Delivery paid 2. Jockey Turner was notified today that beginning with Monday he will be allowed to accept mounts for others than those in the Ainos Turney stable. W. S. Trevey returned last night from Louisville, where he went to superintend the retirement of Hawthorn for the winter at the Douglass Stock Farm near Acton, Ky. Blue Jay will be wintered at the same place. T. Abadic contemplates retiring from the turf on account of ill health and will dispose of his horses next week by public auction. At the same time F. J. Pons will offer for sale seven horses, including Font, Miss Waters and other platers. Amos Turney will ship Glint, Knight Deck and Crisco to Charleston. The remainder of his extensive string will be shippped to Lexington to rest until spring., when they will be sent to the Benning track at Washington, D. C, for active training. Jockey Turner, the stable rider, will go to Charleston, where he will ride this winter. E. J. OConnell has reconsidered his intention of going to Charleston and will send his string to Juarez to race. Secretary Jasr. who is looking after the stake entries for the Juarez track, reported today a good list for the eight closed events to be run off at the Mexican track this winter. Mrs. M. R. Farmer has purchased the yearling colt by Marathon Flash of Lightning from R. Var-wig. W. Walker reports four fine weanlings by his onetime useful performer. Stanley Fay. in Canada. The youngsters are eligible for all the -rovinee-bred fixtures to be run at the various Canadian tracks. The unbeaten Judge Wright, in F. J. Pons stable, was worked three-quarters this afternoon between races. He showed good speed and probably will -be a sharp factor in tlie stakes for which he has , been entered at Charleston. He galloped the six furlongs in 1:21. It was his second work in nearly three weeks. Others worked between the races Included Belloc and Hocnir, three-quarters in 1:17: Oakland and Gladys Y., five-cightlis in 1:05, and Swannanoa, three-quarters in 1:15. Judge Price cautioned jockey P. Hill in the third race on account of his Interference with others in the race while riding Florence Roberts. The jockey claimed that the lilly bore out with him despite his efforts to keep her in. The showing of Balala in the openiug dash occasioned a good deal of adverse cricticlsm. His showing was in striking contrast to his four winning performances on Kentucky courses. Adair and Baker will send their string immediately following the close of the racing here to Charleston.
