WINNERS ARE WELL BACKED FORMFUL RESULTS ATTEND DECISION OF PALMETTO CARD IN MUD. Adverse Track Conditions Result in Many Withdrawals from Days Races Another Purse for A. N. Akin. Charleston, S. C, December 29. Tlie mud runners had another opportunity at Palmetto Park this afteriroon, heavy rains leaving .the course sloppy. There was considerable scratching and because oC the inclement weather conditions the crowd was composed almost entirely -of regulars. The varlom winners were returned by comfortable margins, but place and show horses tigured in several interesting drives. J. U. Strode uncovered a "good thing" In tbu opening dash when Trovato was returned the winner. He was so confidently supported that he went to the post first choice. Troxlcr, who had the mount, opened up a safe lead early and had bis mount well in hand at the end. R. P. Dodsoii kept up his winning streak when A. N. Akin disposed of a small band of two-year-olds in the third. He was ridden by Obert, who scored again on, the favorito. Earl of Savoy, in the closing dash. Tlio public had the better of things with the layers, all the winners being well backed. The fourth race resulted in a surprise to tlie regulars when Undaunted failed to race well enough to place. Squeeler being returned the winner. J. W. Hedyick secured Scarlet Oaks for 1914.sh25 from A. F. Dayton after she was beaten by Shadrach in the fifth race. J. B. Campbell departed this morning for New Orleans to officiate at the coming meeting there. Another large delegation of followers of the siwrt departed in special cars over both roads for the same place. J. W. Johnson bought Salvor from A. G. Blukeley this afternoon at private sale. Blakeley has in charge eight yearlings and one two-year-old that he will take to Cuba. The yearlings were shipped here by H. O. Comstock and include several sons and daughters of Joe Carey out of Sain mares. At the sale held in the paddock last week the prices offered -for-thcyoungstcrs did not reach the reserve bid placed by Mr. Comstock and they were withdrawn. Several of them have shown high bursts of speed in trials. Blakeley has secured second call on the services of jockey D. Connelly for the meeting. The arrivals this afternoon included W. P. Burch. who Is enroute to Cuba for the winter. He will stay here for a few days. Several carloads of horses were shipped from hern to Havana this, evening, including the stables of Archie Ziminer, John Powers and others.
