REGRET TO BE MATED NEXT YEAR. New York, December 12. Speculation is rife among horsemen quartered at the Long Island tracks as to which will be the most suitable sire to send Harry Payne Whitneys great filly Regret to, which will be sent to the stud next season. The young Persimmon stallion, All Gold, which sent the speedy gelding Tumbler to the races this year, has been spoken of. Quite a number of the horsemen discussing the question are of the opinion that the Castleton-bred Peter Pan, a truly grand race horse and a decided success at the stud, would be the logical mate for Regret. Whisk Broom II. has been suggested by others, who have a high regard for the Bpnuie Scotland strain through the Bramble and Ben Brush line, but of course there are those who would regard this cross as quite too close, because both Regret and Whisk Broom II. were sired by Broomstick, but this would be only a repetition of the experiment made by the late James It. Keene when he bred Commando, the son of Domino, to Running Stream, the daughter of Domino, and obtained the eminently successful sire Ultimus. Whisk Broom II. and Regret are rich in the blood of Bonnie Scotland through its best channel; but this is not all. Whisk Broom II. brings into the combination the priceless Maggie B. B. strain through his dam. Audience, by Sir Dixon, which was by Billet Jaconet, by Leamington Maggie B. B. Then again the Blacklock strain figures prominently in the pedigree of Whisk Broom II. through Audience, by Sir Dixon, by Billet, he by Voltiguer, and he by Blacklock and through Brooiiistick, son of Elf, she by Galliard, by Galopin, he by Vedette, by Voltigeur and he by Blacklock; and then this same Blacklock strain through Broomstick again would come into the combination through Regret. But even this is not all the Rich Maggie B. B. strain which would come into the proposed combination through the union of Whisk Broom II. with Regret. Audience, the dam of Whisk Broom II. was by Sir Dixon Sallie McClelland, by Hindoo. Her second dam was Red and Blue by Alarm, and her third dam was no other than the same old Maggie B. B. by Australian, so that Whisk Broom II. would bring into the combination a double cross of the rich Maggie B. B. Strain. Then again, Regret would bring in, besides the Bonnie Scotland and Blacklock strains, through her sire, the blood of Hamburg through her dam, Jersey Lightning, and that of Longfellow through her granddam, Daisy F., by Riley, the splendid son of Longfellow. Regrets victories of the turf include such valuable stakes as the Hopeful and Saratoga Special in her two-year-old season and the Kentucky Derby as a three-year-old. During her three years of racing she earned a total of 0,450.
