NOTES OF THE TURF FROM OTHER LANDS. Mr. Leopold de Rothschild was seventy-one years old on November 22. G. McCall, the jockey, has joined the Royal Engineers, and is stationed at Aldershot. The well-known jockey, H. A. Jelliss, has left Newmarket to join the Royal Flying Corps. Mr. J. I. Colin lias retained twenty-seven boxes lor next years meeting at San Sebastian, Spain. "Deutscher Sport" records trfiit from 1SS2 to 1910 the horses owned by the late Herr J. von Jankovieh-Bcsan won a total of 91,410. Race-goers in Russia like plenty for their money, seventeen races in a day being nothing unusual. At Moscow, on Juue 8, there was a program of nineteen races. A gray four-year-old colt by Roi Ilerode Mill-brook, named Hari Janos II., won the Preis von Simmering at Vienna on October 20. He belongs to Herr N. von Szemere. Knutsford, Silver Wand and four of Mr. Hnltons yearlings have arrived at Newmarket to join other horses belonging to the same owner now in charge of Walters, ;it Albert House. S. Donoghue. the jockey, has sailed for South Africa to fulfill his engagement to ride out there for Mr. S. 15. Joel J. Harris, a well-known layer of odds, went by the same boat. Irish Chief, which was purchased by Mr. S. B. Joel in Ireland for a long price, but has proved sadly disappointing, met with a serious accident recently, and has been destroyed. Many provincial trainers are about to take up their abode at Newmarket. The latest is J. Day, who has taken AVoodlands House, where he will have a dozen or so horses under his care. The Irish Bloodstock Agency has purchased for exportation to South Africa the following Irish two-year-olds: Ben Dowran, by Ben Alder; Game Leg, by Grey Leg Game All, and a gelding by Ben Alder Whitelead II. Mr. Sydney A. Paget, for some time managing the racing stables of the late Mr. W. C. Whitney, the lessor of Volodyovski, who died on September 10 last, aged fifty-eight, left an estate of the gross value of 7,005, with net personalty of 0,000. The first sale of thoroughbreds organized by the Madrid Tattersall took place in November, and was a success. Of the thirty-six horses offered twenty-nine changed hands at prices varying between 1,000 and 9,000 pesetas. The King of Spain purchased Fripon III. for 4,000 pesetas. Baron E. de Rothschild has leased his stallion Isard II. to Comte de Talhouet-Roy. The son of La Mamaritain, Avhieh is to be sent to the Haras du Lude, won 280,000 francs in stakes, his principal successes being the Prix Lagrange and Prix hoiard at Maisons-Laffitte and the Grand Prix at Deauville. Mr. Clarence Hailey. of Newmarket, has purchased from Mr. E. Hulton the two-year-old Poignant for shipment abroad. Poignant, which is a brown gelding by Chaucer Spring Off, won the Plantation Plate, and the Suffolk Nursery, and dead-heated with. Lammennuir in the Prendergast Stakes at Newmarket. At the Cologne October meeting the chief race, the Preis des Winter Favoriten value 0,000, for two-year-olds, one mile, attracted only five runners. Herr It: Hariiels filly, Ayesha, by Nuage Airdrie, which ;was well backed and started at 3 to 1, won easily by three lengths in the hands of the American jockey, Archibald. Two stallions of note died in Ireland recently. One, St. Gris, by Galopin Isabel, when a two-year-old, defeated Flying Fox in the Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempton Park, sharing with the American colt Caiman, the honor of being the only victors over that great son of Onne. The other was Sir Edgar, by Kendal Semolina. Both were fairly successful in stud service, but sired nothing of the highest class. The Berlin racing season came to an end at Karlshdrst on Sunday, October 29. The program consisted of four steeplechases, two hurdle races and a final flat race. The chief event, a steeplechase of the value of 30,000 marks three miles and one-eighth, was won by Lorbas, a five-year-old gelding by Isinglass. Applely by Malua won one of the hurdle races, and Crawford John by Morgen-dale the other, while the flat race fell to a two-year-old by Galtee More. At Berlin-Karlshorst early in November, Kalif, a two-year-old colt by Baltinglass, won the three-quarters of a mile Jungfern Rennen for Herr II. Neumann, beating ten- opponents. Prince W. von Schaumberg-Lippe won the Schleswig Steeplechase two miles and five-eighths with Diamond Hill, an aged gelding by Berrill Odious. The Grand Hurdle Race ,500 brought out a field of fourteen, and the winner was Herr Dodels aged gelding Kentucky American-bred, by Salvator Lela Dell. I
