" REMARKABLE RIDING FEATS IN THIS COUNTRY AND ENGLAND. ONLY SIX JOCKEYS EVER WON FULL CARD IN ONE DAY i 4, : fr In riding the winners of the entire card of six races at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky., June 5, 1907, James Lee, the colored jockey under contract to J. B. Respess, of Cincinnati. Ohio, established a worlds record. This feat was never duplicated until July 5, 1916, when, at Reno, the apprentice, Herman Phillips, rode six winners, the full card for that days racing. The chronicles of racing in America and England show that only four other jockeys ever rode as many as six winners in one day and. oddly enough, on each occasion the card embraced more than six races. George Fordhara, the celebrated English jockey, who scored his first win on Hampton in 1851. and his last on Bragg in 1S83, was, ou the authority of London Sporting Life, the first to ride six winners- in one day. It was at the Bibury Club meeting at Stockbridge prior to 1S73. There were seven races on the card. Fordhaui rode in all of them. In one, however, there was a dead heat, and his mount was defeated la the run-off. Fordham died October 12. 1SS7. Fred Archer, the most successful jockey in English turf history, who scored his first triumph on Athol Daisy in 1S70 and his last on Blanchland at Newmarket, Friday, October 29, 1880, was the second to ride six winners in one day. He did it at Lewes, August 5, 1882. There were seven races ou the card, but he had no mount in the last one. Fred Archer committed suicide November S, 18SC During his career he rode 2,748 winners. The next to accomplish the feat was "Monk" Overton, the colored American rider, who had his heydey in the latter eighties and early nineties. Overton rode six winners at Washington Park. Chicago. July 10, 1S91. There were seven races on the card. He won the first, had no mount in the second, and took the last five, including the Maiden Stakes, which was won by Eastin and Larabies Poet Scout. The only other rider to duplicate these performances was C. Turner, an apprentice, who, on April 9 1912, at Charleston, S. C, piloted six of his seven mounts to victory. In the sixth race of the day he finished unplaced. Eleven other jockeys gained the distinction of having won the full card, but in each instance there were five races or less on the program. Stoval twice won a card of four races, and George Covington won one of four races and another of three races. Fifty-three times have American jockeys ridden five winners in one day, but in all save- thirteen instances they had mounts in six or seven races. The record of five winners out of five mounts belongs to Walter Miller, once the foremost rider in America. He accomplished this three times. At Bennlu" April 3. 190G, Miller rode the winners of the last five races, and the following day was the pilot of the winners of the first three races, making eight successive victories, which is a record in this country. At the Harlem track, Chicago, September 7 and 8, 1900, W. Buchanan rode nine winners out of eleven mounts, but his victories were not consecutive. Instances of four winners ridden In one day in this country are too numerous to mention Steeplechase jockey F. Williams made a record by riding the winners of all the steeplechase races run during the meeting at Windsor, Ont., August 28 to September 4, 1911. There were five races of the sort and Williams made a clean sweep of them.
