This is evidenced by the fact tiiat approximately 200 horses hare been wintered there this year, which number is largely in excess of that of any recent year. The fact that nut one Kerious case of illness has developed among the Thoroughbred colony this winter, bears strong testimony to the hoalthfuln-ss of the place. Recent arrivals from the winter tracks and stoek farms have brought the equine colony up to 250. This number will shortly lie augmented by other arrivals in the near future. The Derby eligibles quartered at Douglas Tark. the other race track in this city, have also done remarkably will and all are enjoying the nest of health. They number an even dozen and include s..me of the BMW« prominent candidates for the rich prize. The list embraces Barry Kelly. Mid way. Cudgel. I.utterseotch 11.. lcnrod. Spring Wheat, Rerlin. Al M. Dick. Torchbearer. GeMea Fox. Oreea Jones Bad Trevisco. The latter is an Irish celt and is lieing trained for tiie race by W. -I. Young, who also lias charge of Midway. Trevisco was purchased by his present owner. K. D. Alexander of Lexington, last fall, after the colt had scored a victory in the Raldoylc Produce Stakes in Ireland. Trevisco. Torchbearer and Golden Pw* are tl.e only imported Derby eligibles in tripling at the local tracks. Torchbearer and Golden Fox only recently arrived here from Lexington. They have beta entered in the Derby as the property of the Kentucky Stable and are being trained by Phil Chinn. who brought them to this country. The presence on the local tracks of so many Derby eligibles is arousing thai early in the training ■eaaaa more than the usual interest, and. although the colts have boon given nothing more arduous than slow gallops, they attract each morning a large throng of rnilbirds. all anxious to catch a glimpse of the most-talked of candidates. In line with kia well known policy of progress and his desire to eater to the comfort and convenience of his patrons. ol. Matt .1. Winn, man affer of Churchill Downs, is having a number of improvements made at that track, anil is eonteni plating Other* that will lie undertaken and completed before tin- spring meeting open-. Among the improvements now under waj are the enlarge liient of the betting bed and the engagement of the pari-mutiiol cashiers quarters. Improvements at Churchill Downs. The fence that divided the betting shell and p.ildock grounds is being moved to the eastward ■bawl fifty feet. This will afford more room to patrons when cashing their tickets. Fourteen addition:!! cashiers windows have been constructed. making i n for fort -nine to work. This lias necessitated tlie extension of the pari-runt ucl department quarters, about forty feet towards Central ■venae. Several other changes are under way. all of which will add to the convenience of the tracks patron-. Colonel Winn, who returned to Loui-vill" toda rein a fortnight* visit in New York, is much encouraged orer the interest taken in tin east in this yon- Kentucky Derby. lb- declared that he was simply amazed by the number of compliments he received from leading eastern turfmen over the splendid entry list this years Derby attracted. The easterner* all regard the Kentucky Derby as the premier turf race of the year for three-year-olds. The raiding of the added money value of the race to 3,000 proved a big advertiseaieal for tlie Derby, according to Colonel Winn, and made it one of the most talked of turf events of the year. While in New fork Colonel Winn attended to none matters m connection with the Kmpire City track, of which In- is also manager. Kntries to tin -takes to I-- run at this course close March 1. and Colonel Winn was much gratified over the satisfactory manner in which they are filling. The entries this year will far outnumber those of any previous year at tie Ymikers track.
