ROBERT IANSON CALLED BY DEATH. Merrber of Famous Family of Turfmen and Great Steeplechase Rider and Trainer. The famous ex-cross-country rider and trainer, Robert IAnsoii. who underwent an operation last Nove mbe-r. die-el at F.psom on Sunday night. February 4. He was one of the finest steeplechase jocke-ys of his time, being a capital judge- of pace-. and was possessed of such strength iu the saddle-that as a youngster he was generally known as the pocket Hercules. His first big win was on Mr. Pawleys Roving Maid, iu the- dram! Seftou Steeplechase, and though he- Bet TCI rode a Grand National winner, he was decidedly unfortunate not to do so. In the opinion of Arthur N ightingall. who himself has ridden three- Qraad National winners. IAnson was the ecpial of any jockey he had sc-e-n during a ipiarter of a centurys experience. As a trainer. IAnson also met with much success. He- prepared AaaterUta to win the Grand National in 1S77. and so well had he tried the-Bone that "all Epsom was on." Austerlitz was ridden by his owner. Mr. Hobson. who, though ordinarily a rapohlr rider, nearly threw the race away through excitement. Only a very power ful fire year old horse such as Austerlitz could have won in the circumstances, his rieler urging him on at top speed whenever any of his rivals came near him in the second half of the rae-e. IAnson was an indefatigable pedestrian, and his genial disposition endeared him to all who knew him. After giving up training, he still took an active part in racing, and for some years was clerk of the e-ourse at Sandown Park. He was a member of that great north of England family of turfmen, which owned the world-famous broodmare Queen Mary, and from her bred such ecle-brities as Blink Bonny. Bonnie Scotland. Haricot, liraxey. P.alrowiiie. Broomielnw. Bliukhoolio. Bonnie Doon and others. Of those- named. Bonnie Scotland and P.alrowiiie were- brought to this reentry and Blink Bonny won the Epsom Derby of ls;,7.
