LATONIA CHAMPIONSHIP STAKES ITEMS. Over a Hundred and Fifty Entries Already In — Mr. Macomber Only Makes One. Cincinnati. O.. February 24. — The Latonia Championship Stakes for 1919 has created a great amount of discussion in all sections of the country. First the breeders and the Latonia Jockey Club were not in accord on some of its conditions, but these were finally ironed out to tin- satisfaction of all. The first point of discussion among horsemen was the re -opening clause. This was eliminated Now Captain B, B. Cassatt of Chesterbrook Farm has spewed a new avenue of discussion by objecting to geldings being p-rmitted to COOS ptte. Captain Cassatt has long fostered turf innovations, his two-year-old rule beiaaj one to b.- adopted by the Jockey Club. Of course it is too late now to change the conditions of the race for 19PJ. but if general manager Haehmeister is satisfied that it will meet with tin- support of the horsemen, he would be perfectly willing to follow the suggestion of Captain Cassatt. In fact he invites tiny criticism that enjoin- connected with the turf desires to make. Captain Cassatt* letter was published in Daily Racing Form of February 22. Championship Stakes Entries Encouraging. Two weeks before the d w* of the championship stakes, the Latonia Jockey Club is in receipt of ISO entries, which is highly phasing to the officials. They are quite confident now that over 300 will In- in line and the number m.:y possibly reach 400. Breeder* from Maryland. Virginia and one from Maine have sent in entries. In fact many of the eatrie* received to date have been from persons of Wheal Haehmeister has never heard. One surprise was the entry list from the A. K. M icomber stable. Walter H. Jennings sent in the entry of a colt by Jim Jaflney as the lone representative of that vast establishment. Hut the Macomber stable possesses no yearlings except the one entered. This means that Macomber is likely to be a heavy buyer of yearlings this year and will particularly desire those which have been entered in the Championship Stakes. This stable spent nearly 0,080 last fall trying to win the Latonia Cup. so it can be seen what it might spend to own the winner of such a race as this. The heaviest nominator outside of Headle.v and Ha nook lias been iiuoril A. Cochran, the eastern ■port*— B. He has sent in ten — seven colts and three fillies. In hi- hatch is a colt by the Celebrated Tracery, sou of Rock Sand, and the champion three year-old of all Fngland in 1912. Tracery is in the stud in Kngland and his stud fee is 82.500, so it can be seen that this colt is evidenb bred to a high class mare. Cochrans other nominations are in His Majesty, Ogdcn. Oiaiaadale, Celt ami Sweep. Some of Nominations Already Named. Some of the colt* and fillies nominated have air ady been named. Herbert P. Oardnor of the row n Stable, has entered John J. Casey and Jack Bealey. J. Temple Uwathmey of Caa tertiary Pana, nrrenti-n. Ya.. has catered Lady Slipper, by Hessian, and Scotch Yerdiet by Rnllot Oaswre. Win. Lincoln Crosby of Hoston baa entered S-a Sun. by Sea Horse. Herbert J. Brows of Portland. Me., entered Prosperino. a black filly by Yiilcain. A. H. Hancock has add d another entry in a black colt by Black Sand, which was bred in Kraiice. and Which he has just purchased While in the east. When the entries close on Thursday. March 1. manage/ Haehmeister is confident that the best in the yearling line will be nominated. other entries which close on Man ii 1 are to the Biae stakes to be run during the spring meeting at Lntoi ia and the fair stakes to be run at Doog la* Iark. Labiums stake races are headed by the Latonia Derby with 0,000 added, followed by tin- Cincinnati Trophy with ,080 added.
