TAX REVENUE WILL REACH S170.000. An order in council has been passed by the Ontario government providing means for ascertaining the amount of business done by the Jockey Clubs in this province, as a guide to the imposition of the additional taxation that the treasurer promised for next year. Eight clubs operate in Ontario, including the half-milers, and last year they paid into the public coffers more than 50,000 in the way of the daily license fee and amusement tax. This year it is anticipated that the provincial revenue from the same sources will be increased by some 0,000. because of the raising of the amuse -■Mat tax to twenty-five cents, all of which will now be paid by the clubs, though some of them left the ten cents tax last year to be paid by their pa*rons. The half-milers escaped the increase, as their admission fee is only fifty cents. For the purpose of working out some form of profit tax. the nature of which has not yet been disclosed by the treasurer, the order in council provides that an accountant representing the Provincial Treasurers Department shall be allowed access to the books of all tracks and to the mtituel department at all times during the progress of a race meeting. Also that before the 31st of Decemlier each year, the associations shall furnish the provincial treasurer with a record of their receipts and expenditures. As the Jockey Clubs, under the Dominion corporations war tax act, now pay over to the Ottawa treasury twenty-five pat cent of all profits over seven and one half per cent, and that share for the public was largely increased by this years legislation, the apparent outcome of their operations is that their shareholders will not have much left for themselves when all the tax-gatherers are through. — Francis Nelson in Toronto Globe.
