BIG SALARY FOR STEEPLECHASE JOCKEY. Kdward B. McLean, the Washington sportsman, who has just joined the ranks of steeplechase owu-trs, is determined to cut a figure in jumping races if money can attain that object. Jockey Fred Williams, one of the best cross -country riders, has been engaged to ride the McLean jumpers at a salary of !t;r.tM a month. So far as known, this is the largest salary ever paid a steeplechase rider in this country. The contract with Mr. McLean had scarcely been ratified when Williams received a cablegram from J. 1. Colin, offering him a contract to ride in steeplechases at Chantilly from May 7 to July li, but bad to decline the offer.
