April 13. — Displaying the same -xcellent form that has characterized all of his work at the increased distance of a mile. Kenneth D. Alexanders colt Kscoba galloped a mile at Douglas Park yesterday morning iu 1:43.-. and established a new record for the present local training se:son He covered the mile iu the following fractions— 1J. i»4-»-.. 3 i,. 50, l:01,a5. l:15*i. l:2»:-5. 1:1.*.-.. The colt, with jockey Groth in the saddle, carried considerably more than his Derby weight. He was accompanied in the work by the four-year-old Midway, the pair working together all the way. Trainer Ward had instructed Groth to make the mile in 1:43 and the lioy rated Hie colt almost faultlessly by coming within one-fifth of a second of this time". The col; cooled out in good style and showed no signs of distress. In commenting on Kscoba* preparation for the Derby trainer Ward stated that he never trained a colt "with better satisfaction. "He will go to the |s st as fit to run as any of the contestants, and. whether he wins or loses the Derby, the preparation In- is now receiving will -not prevent him rrom starting in subsequent races." is the way that Mr. Ward summarized the situation. Continuing, he said: "Manv a good horse has lost an important race that he should have won simply because j„. was not in condition and inferior horses have won fir the op|Ksite reason. Those who want Kscoba to win the Derby can rest satisfied that ho will be in a thorough state of preparedness on the afternoon of the big race." Kscoba was not raced in blinkers as a two-year-old, but trainer Ward has already started to use them on the colt and will continue their Use. Regarding whom had b-en selected to ride the colt in his Derhv engagement Mr. Ward said that, question would lie settled by Messrs. Alexander and Morris.
