i . • . , DESCENDANTS OF RATAPLAN IN SERVICE Existing Line Came Through His and Queen Marys Staying Son Blinkhoolie. The male descent from Rataplan comes solely through Wisdom, whose son Sir Hugo was well established in Australia through Sir Foote, but never made good in England. Love Wisely was much more successful and may even have lieen a better horse, at any rate, he sired an excellent son here in Bridg. of Canny, whose son Cantilever inherited the paternal merit and now s»ands at Wis-sett Stud. Ilalesworth. Suffolk. Cantilevers defeat of Tracery will be long remembered, as also will his Cambridgeshire victory at a time when he was far from well. It should lie remembered of this Wisdom line of blood that it comes through Blinkhoolie son of Rataplan — Queen Mary, which was one of the finest stayers ever known. Bridge of Canny himself was sent to South America, where he died after a successful season or two. but his brother Bridge of Allan remains with us. and stands at the Hall Stud. Borough lireen. Newmarket. He has already sired some useful winners and nothing can surpass his breeding on the side of his dam. Santa Brigida. by St. Simon — Bridget sister to Melton. Another good son of Love Wisely is Amadis. winner of the Doncaster Cup. Jockey Club Cup and Gold Yase at Ascot. Ilis dam. Caleta, is by Ladas — Galanthis. by Galopin. He stands at T. Readers Newmarket. There is a Bridge of Canny horse at the Meddler Stud. Newmarket. This is Dairy Bridge, hafl -brother to Ziuovia. I wrote about him some time ago, for Zinovia is likely to bring him into note. He was a winner of high class. BLINKHOOLIE A GREAT STAYER. This appears to be a full list of the male descendants of Rataplan available for this season. It is a hardy, staying line, well deserving to lie devehqwd more numerously. Blinkhoolie. the sire of Wisdom. was really a wonder over a distance of ground. No one has ever seen the Alexandra Plate at Ascot won in quite such smashing style as he displayed as a four-year-old in l*t S. There were eight runners, including Trocadero. Tyneuale. Dalesman and West-wick. all well-known stayers, but Blinkhoolie fairly spreadeagled them — in fact, only three passed tie post. He won, pulling up. by six lengths from Trocadero. At the same meeting he had slaughtered Julius at even weights by six lengths for the Cold Yase. though Julius the year before had given Blinkhoolie fourteen pounds and beaten him out of a place for the Cesarewitch, when Blinkhoolie started favorite at - to 1. No one ever succeeded in explaining that running. Love Wisely was a worthy grandson of Blinkhoolie, for he, too. was a great stayer, as he proved by winning the Ascot Cup and being sound enough to run for it again the following year. Rataplan himself had the reputa- tion of lieing a stouter horse than his brother. Stockwell. though not in the same class.- W. Alli- sou in London Sportsman.
