PIMLIC0 SPRING HANDICAP ENTRIES It Is the First Important Event of Season for Horses from the Older Division. New York. April 22. — It has been usual of late years to consider the Metropolitan Handicap as the first important test of the turf year for horses iu the handicap division, but for 1918 it would seem that the Pimlico Spring Handicap of the Maryland Jockey Club is to lead off tlie year. It is a race to which ,000 is added und over the mile-und-sev-enty-yards distance. The increased value has made it of greater importance and for the running next month just such a field as might he expected in midsummer at Saratoga has been named. With few exceptions the stars of last year are found in the list and it is probable. that the field will lie both larger and more fashionable than has ever been seen before in an early handicap. Major August Belmont lias named Hourless. Strom -boli and his good three-year-old Lucullite. Wilfrid Viau has nominated Omar Khayyam. Westy Hogan and three others, and it may be that the great pair of four-year-olds. Hourless and Omar Khayyam, will again fight it out as they did in the Realization and at Laurel later in the fall of last year. J. K. L. Ross has among his nominations Cudgel, rated as the best three-year-old in the west last year and by many considered the equal of both the above-mentioned colts. Harry Payne Whitney is represented by his sterling old gelding Borrow, winner of the Kentucky Handicap as well as many other good races. Rickety, Bellringcr, Tumbler and Sungold. Joseph E. Widener has named Pickwick and Naturalist and three good three-year-olds. Corn Tassel. Campfire and Straight Forward, are among the nominations of Richard T. Wilson. J. W. May has his good mare Bayberry Candle among the cljgjblcs. E. R. Bradley has as his nomination Knlitnn. winner of tlie Preakness last year. Roamer and Ticket are two to bear the silks of Andrew Miller and John. Sauford has among those he has named George Smith. Gex. Meteorite and Achilles. Then in the matter of three-year-olds the race Is particularly attractive, and most of the good ones that are being pointed for the Preakness are also being fitted for this race against older horses. ALL STAR THREE-YEAR-OLDS. Besides Lucullite, there are Sun Briar, Papp. shan-ballymore, Orestes, Bully Boy,, High Cost. Charlie Leydecker. Lady Dorothy, Enfilade. Lanius. Jusqu au Bout, Trompe la Morte. Jack Hare Jr.. Dr. Johnson and Red Sox, to say nothing of others of known quality. In fact, about the only topnotch two-year-olds of 1917 whose names do not appear on the list are Kenneth D. Alexanders Escoba and John San-fords Tippity Witchet. Naturally there are many horses here that may be eliminated, but handicap conditions will bring many more of them together even with the topnotchers under silks. 1
