JEFFERSON GOING BETTER Firmer Track Abates Stumbling and Brings Closer Finishes. Bribed Voter at Short Odds Bleeds in the Stretch When About to Win. NEW ORLEANS, La.. March 7. The outstanding surprise of the New Orleans racing of this winter came in the fourth race this afternoon, when Bribed Voter, held at prohibitive odds, failed dismally, due lo being stricken with a hemorrhage in the stretch, the winner turning up in Glasstoi, an extreme outsider, which triumphed by a nose over Hanovia. The wiener ran a good race by maintaining the lead for nearly the entire way. The race was intended to serve as the feature of the card, but withdrawals reduced it steadily until it appeared a walkover for Bribed Voter. Frederick the Greats elimination from the race was due to some trouble that the motor van met on its trip with the horse from the. Fair Grounds and he failed to reach the track in time to start in the race. The improved track eliminated the stumbling running by starters so frequent on former days and the contests were closely fought from the barriers rise. Some of the finishes were extra spirited affairs and created enthusiasm. The attendance was again of generous size and ring activities also of good volume. Tin talent began badly when Nellie Witwer won the purse in the initial race, with Ogden Girl in second place. The latter was probably best, hilt u faulty getaway proved her undoing. Siieidmnn, who had the mount on Dundreary in the race and finished second, was suspended for six days by the stewards for rough riding. The final race went to Tranby, which led for the entire distance Sophia Gatewood was favorite in this, .but ran poorly. Jockey G. Gruber, who was ruled off during the Jefferson Park fall racing in connection with George Chancellor, is seeking to get a rehearing, but judge Murphy is not inclined in that direction. SARATOGA STAKE BLANKS DISTRIBUTED The stake blanks of the Saratoga Racing Association were distributed to horsemen this afternoon. The entries to the numerous diversified stakes close March 31. Marshall Brothers will not ship their horses lo Ilot Springs, according to their recent plans, and will transfer the horses to Churchill Downs at the close of racing here. G. Peterson, who has been confined to his home by illness, has sufficiently recovered to transfer his horses and go to Hot Springs. Opportunitys poor showing Thursday resulted in a ruling being issued that the horses entry would not 1 accepted here in the future. This ruling is not with prejudice against his owner. In his last start at the Fair Grounds., which was a winning one. Opportunity was badly kicked while at the post by King Neptune and came out of the race bleeding profusely from many gashes on his hind legs. Yesterday he appeared sore going to the post and ran in keeping with his condition. It. A. Smiths stable, which includes Slippery Elm. will be shipped to Hot Springs on the next special leaving here. The consignment of B. W. Jones, which includes Thelma E., will go at the same time. The first of the specials for Hot Springs, made up of seven cars, baggage and sleeper, departed Thursday evening. The next special for the same place will depart Monday or Tuesday. A. I!. Spreckels horses that have figured prominently in the Fair Grounds racing will be kept here for some time before being shipped to Churchill Downs, where they will take part in the racing there. Secretary Joseph McLennan of the Bowie track has notified horsemen intending to race there next spring to make their applications for stall space no later than Saturday. J. O. Talbott. J. B. Goodpian and T. B. Waters will ship their horses to Hot Springs next Monday. W. 0. Wealil and W. H. Fizer are also planning departure with some of their horses at the same time. Jockey Burke was much in the limelight yesterday, riding four winners in succession and scoring a dean sweep for the day, as they were the only mounts he had.
