: NEWMARKET PLATE 253 YEARS OLD An historic race for the Newmarket. England. Town Cup produced a walk-over for Walter Griggs gelding Karabunduni, Captain Simpson riding, October 9. on Newmarket Heath. The race was instituted by King Charles II. iu 1003. and is thus 253 years old. Its prize is endowed with a parcel of land which brings a yearly rent of 1. This sum and the entries for the previous year S15 each, less for the clerk of the course and for the poor of Newmarket, constitute the. prize. Under tin; terms of the endowment the Town Plate must be run forever on the Newmarket round course, starting at the July Stakes stand, at four miles, on the second Thursday of October yearly. The fundamental idea when the race was first made was to gather horses in a content which, could "gallop and stay." Lust year Robert Sievier won the Town Plate with Green Falcon. This years walkover will reduce the value of the race for 1920. Ix-causo the starting fee of one year goes to incrduso the stakes for the next.
