LAUREL MEETING A HUGE! SUCCESS OVER 00,000 IN STAKES AND PURSES DISTRIBUTED AMONG TEE HORSEMEN COMMANDER ROSS THE LEADING . OWNER The Maryland State Fairs fall meeting, which opened at Laurel October 1 and continued to and including October 31, embraced twenty-seven days of racing, during which time. 189 races Were inn and 18,384 distributed in stakes and purses, the daily average distribution amounting to the goodly sum of 1,792. Practically all the most prominent turfmen in the east were represented at Iaurel with the result that such stars as Sir Barton. Cudgel, The Porter, Exterminator, Billy Kelly:, Mad Hatter, On Watch and many others of equal or less renown were seen in action at one time or another. The racing as a consequence was of a high standard and when the real stars were not engaged the even caliber of the cheaper grade of horses that took part in the selling and claiming races made up for lack of quality and furnished many an interesting contest. A distinctive feature of .the meeting was. ..the neck-and-neck struggle between the powerf ul establishments of Commander J. K. L. Ross and, S. 0. Hildreth for the leadership of the winnings owners. The former triumphed by a small margin, the Ross horsos winning eleven races and 7,483. while the Hildreth representatives won ten and 0,490. J. F. Schorr, J. W. Loft. H. P. Whitney and J. O. Tal- bott were among other. owners who finished close to the top of the list of money-winning owners, of Which the following won 00 or more, each: Owner. 1st. 2di 3d. Amt. Ross, J. K.
