. ! OPENING DAY AT BOWIE . . Drummond Wins Inaugural; Days Feature in Close Finish. - Ormonda and Lucius Bring Dis- appointment-to Their Many Admirers. BOWIE, Md., November 14.-The fallmeeting of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Association began here today at Prince Georges Park under fair weather conditions and before a good sized crowd, considering that it was Friday, always, more or less of an off day in racing. The track was in fairly good condition and should be faster than ever in a day or so. The Chesapeake Purse, a dash of one mile for three-year-olds, was provided as the main attraction and M. Shea furnished the. winner of it. in, his .much improved Ogden colt, Drummond. However, Drum . mond had no easy time of it and was forced to the limit to defeat Ballet Dancer II. The latter set a good pace throughput; ;ind held on well when .Drummond challenged. -Not until in the -last sixteenth was - the Shea colt able to draw away, Rowan outriding Hamilton in a corking finish. The four-time winner Ormonda brought, much disappointment to her many admirers when she failed to figure at all in the result of the-isecond race, for which she was favorite. She ran Ytbad race and --was- always-outdiatauQedii qsHdnajpeAciip. .in Ophelia, which showed the most speed, and led from start to finish by a good margin. W. R. Coes Armistice found most favor on the part of the speculative public in the opener and went to the post an outstanding choice. He . won, but only, after a hard struggle with" Col. Murphj, the result being in doubt until the last few strides. The Hallenbeck colors were to the fore in the third race when Kashmir carried them to an easily achieved victory, finishing two lengths in front-of -Pastoral Swain. CharlieXeydecker, the favorite, was practically left at the post aud had no chance thereafter. HAUBERK ANEASY WINNER.. Hauberk with Butwell in the saddle found easy opposition in the fifth race and was only cantering at the end, four lengths in advance of; the other contestants. -: . The final races of .the afternoon went to Queenof the Sea and Handfull, the former winning the sixth in easy fashion, while Handfull put up a fine performance to beat Lucius in the seventh. Queen of the Sea was favorite- in her- race and Rowan, kept her under reserve- during the early running. She moved up fast rounding the far turn and experienced no -.trouble - in passing,, Poultney, .drawing away into a, safe lead at "the end". In the final race Handfull led all the way, and though hard pressed in the stretch managed to withstand Uie best efforts of the heavily backed Lucius. Judge Joseph A. Murphy, who is one. of the officials in the stand here and who just arrived from New Orleans, reports that the prospects, for. a successful racing, season, at the Crescent .City were never brighter and already there are over 600 horses quartered at the Fair Grounds and at Jefferson Park - tracks. .- Entered for ,500, two claims were lodged for Hauberk after his victory in the fifth race, his owner retaining liini for ,615. J. Lumsden was the other claimant. -"-- " The fields in "a niaj6rity of the races were greatly 1 reduced by scratches, owing to the lack of transportation facilities for the horses -frptnA Pimlico to : Bowie, but a large delegation arrived today and large fields should be the rule in the future.
