PROWESS OF MUSTAPHA AND BENDIGO While lacking that burst of speed which always, except in the case of the real plodder, characterizes the high-class racer at the finish of a contest, no gamer or more generous horse ever ran than Mus-tapha, by Obsron Chatty. The gallant old chestnut gelding, having hopelessly broken down, was destroyed the other day, and during his long career won twenty-seven races, two of them this season, when thirteen years old, for his owner, Victor Tabor. For Lord Carnarvon Mustapha ran second for the Cambridgeshire three years in succession, to Chrislmas Daisy in 1909 and the following season, lUid to Long Set in 1911. being asked to give the last-named son of Rabelais no less than twenty-two pounds. At the December sales that year Mr. Tabor bought Mustapha on behalf of Mr. Gant for 512,000, and for him the horse ran close up fourth in the Cambridgeshire of 1912, won by Adam Bcde, this being his last appearance in the contest. A much more famous horse, BendigO, did greater feats than Mustapha in the Great Houghton Handicap, winning it in 18S3, as a three-year-old; being second to Florence the next year, chiefly because his rider, Jim Snowden, was tipsy, otherwise the former could never have given him thirteen pounds and a head beating; and again second, lMuten easily, in 1885, when trying to give ten pounds to Ilaisanterie. Bendigo did not run for the race in 1SS0, but in 1SS7, the last time the race took place over the old course, lie ran second, beaten a v, half length by Gloriation, when giving him thirty-five pounds.
