PRUDERYS ALABAMA STAKES t 1 Wins Historic Race in a Close Fit With Bit of White. t Thunderclap Beats Noted Sprinters in a Fast Run Three-Quarters June Grass Wins, i SARATOGA, N. Y., August 11. The rich Alabama Stakes :it a mile and a iii:i rir. having a guaranteed value of 0,000, if which tin; winnors net portion amounted to .,27."!, was won by Harry Payne "Whitneys Prudery by a scant half length from E. R. Bradleys Bit of White, John Sanfords Cliateau Thierry finishing third and Careful, the only other starter, following the trio home. The time of the rare, 2:04 If,, equaling its record. Prudery was a pronounced favorite, backed solidly by the eastern contingent, while Bit of "White had her loyal support by the Kentucky and western brigade. The other pair of starters, so far as betting is concerned, only appealed to those on the lookout for an unexpected happening. Due to Lykes suspension, G. W. Carroll had the mount on Itit of White, while Fa tor was astride the Whitney filly, Sande on Careful and Keogh on the Sanford representative. Careful and Prudery raced to the fore immediately, but Carroll rushed Itit of "White by the pair on the first turn and took an easy lend, which she held under restraint for three-quarters before there was a gradual closing up of the. rear--guard. Careful found" her tnsk too strenuous at the mile, but Prudery came gallantly nnd an eighth from the finish headed Bit of White. But tile latter was not to be denied without a . fight and she continued on gamely, but Prudery likewise held on in unflinching style and, while she was not punished, she had nothing to spare at the end to win. Cliateau Thierry found Careful giving way in the stretch and overhauled her with ease. It was generally conceded that had Lyke been astride of Bit of White she would have run to better advantage, for he understands her moods and style of racing. MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN RACING. There was marked improvement in todays racing, horses of a better grade furnishing several of the contests, and it served as a magnet to attract the best week-day attendance of the meeting. Lawn activity was on the order of previous years, with the advantage at the end of the afternoon resting with the talent, most of the winners being heavily backed. The Baneocas Stable made amends during the afternoon for several recent failures when it scored heavily over the success of Thunderclap, which showed a sparkling performance in the Burnt Hills Handicap at three-quarters and won with great ease from good sprinters that included Smoke Screen and Oeorgie, with such veterans as Motor Cop and Naturalist among the beaten ones. Bo-prisal, with his pair of former victories hero, was favored, hut an outer post position, coupled with his riders action in guiding him wide on the turns, proved his undoing. Sande played a conspicuous part in Thunderclaps victory, for he kept him close to the inner rail, and when the spread came ou the stretch turn saved much ground and, having a comparatively fresh horse, as a result of saving tactics in the early running, flashed by Smoke Screen in the last eighth to win as he pleased. Smoke Screen, which hail led from the start, ran a good race and held on gamely for second place. Oeorgie moved up with a rush in the stretch and headed the others in the last stride for third money. The Bedstone Stables Billy McLaughlin, which had disappointed previously here, was again an overwhelming choice and this time he gave but slight concern to his backers, for he rushed into the lead promptly at the start and showed the way for the entire mile, beating Kirklevington witli ease. Night Baider, the only other starter in the race, never figured prominently at any stage of the running. A highly regarded band of youngsters started in the closing race, a dash of five and a half furlongs, and it resulted in an easy victory for June Grass over Mercntio, with Snob II. in third place. The tirst-timer. Bunting, owned by Harry Payne Whitney, was made an outstanding favorite, this being due to splendid trials he had displayed on several occasions. He began well, hut ran green and failed to respond to Sandes urging until too late in the Ktretch drive. Fator, who had the mount on the winner, hustled him hard and soon overtook Mer-cillo. which had gotten off in his full stride. The pair raced in advance of their opponents to the end, but .Merciitios efforts to down the leader were futile at all times. Snob II. finished gamely to land in third place. ANOTHER VICTORY FOR H. P. WHITNEY. The opener, another two-year-old dash, found the nairy Payne Whitney colors again in front, when Pastoral led for the entire way and beat Eager Eyes, Lucky Gift following in third place. There might have been a different result had Ycargin on Lady Mother not taken her back sharply at the utart and practically eliminated his mount from contention, for she closed a tremendous gap under hard riding and was going fastest at the finish. Pibroch proved best of the ordinary hand that tsti.rtod in the fifth race at a mile and won from Itoyal Duck, which had up 125 pounds and had closed an immense gap in the last quarter from a tardy beginning. Galiot finished third. Sam Iiouis claimed Itoyal Duck :it a cost of ,585. Pastoral changed ownership after the first race, going to B. A. Lane at a cost of .,505 via the claiming route. J. Simon Henley will break and develop the yearlings that are being bought by W. Goodwin, who is a newcomer to racing. Miss Joy will be an absentee from the Saratoga Special next Saturday, trainer Milam deeming this expedient in view of the fillys condition. She has not been in her best form since coming here and iter Flash Stakes and Schuylerville StaKes victories did not afford her an opportunity to regain it. Couliuued on second page. PRUDERYS ALABAMA STAandES Continued from first page. It is thought that witli a rest she will round to her best and her next race will be in the Spinaway Stakes, in which she will meet the best of h-r age and sex. Miss Joys absence from the Sarai :.t Special will not leave trainer Milam without r-pre sentation in the race, for he intends to star,. Mr Hugh, winner of the Sanford Memorial Sti.Ue-s. Jockey L. Elisor, who has come under ofI;il displeasure upon several occasions this sumv i was suspended for the remainder of the meeti i by the stewards today, for reporting to the ee-k of the scales in an intoxicated condition. He h;i . one mount scheduled. Morvich was given an easy three-quarters til 1 for the Saratoga Special in 1:15, but will b given a stiff work-out Friday morning. Frank J. Bryan distributed to owners this morri g blanks for the valuable stakes to lie run at tin-AVoodbino Park track next full by the Ontnrit Jockey Club. The stakes close August is, and are to be run during the seven days racing from September 24 to October 1, inclusive. AVhiskawuy worked an impressive turep-quurters trial this morning in 1:1.", in preparation for his start in the Saratoga Special next Saturday. As a sequel to yesterdays bad-looking jumping race, in which Saywhich was returnee! the winner, after AVisest Fool and Robert Oliver hud failed to run over the proper course, the National Step!e-chase and Hunt Association is conducting nn extensive probe. F. II. Aon Stade, representing till organization as steward here, began the investigation immediately after the race and, as a result, many of the "slips" handled by the oralizeri were called in for scrutiny. The officials wer moved to action after trainer James Ilealy, traiin of Robert Oliver, had complained strongly 1 ,. rumors that had reached him and also vi..ii 1 hi dissatisfaction with the ride that P. ir had put up on the horse. Hltc D. Bowman of Louisville, well knni 1 n Kentucky tracks, was an arrival today. He ih tored here.
