FIREBRAND STILL SHINES Victor Over the Best in the Covington Handicap. r rl Bradleys Cracks Figure as Favorites Only in the Race Gold-blatt Takes Two Races. c ;C rn LATOXIA, Ky., September 10. Firebrand added further to his prestige this afternoon and contributed an additional ,000 to his owners, when he accounted for the Covington Handicap at a mile and three-sixteenths and won from Aphie Dear anil Lady Madcap, with nine other racers in their rear, including Black Servant and Best Pal. The Hawkins three-year-old raced this afternoon in the same consistent fashion that marked his fine race of last Saturday when he won the Latonia Handicap. The chief surprise of his victory today was due to its being over a fast track. Heretofore he has been regarded as strictly a capital mud-runner and his victories last spring were over heavy tracks. Kennedy, his rider, kept him in the front division during the early running and rushed him into the lead on the stretch turn, but through the last eighth he was menaced seriously by Aphie Dear, which continued to press. him dangerously to the end. Lady Madcap was another three-year-old to get part of the money by finishing third. The near-victory of Aphie Dear after her dismal showing in her preceding race occasioned adverse comment. In her last race she was decisively beaten by ordinary racers. The Bradley pair. Best Pal and Black Servant, were outstanding choices for the race, but after Black Servant gave a high display of speed for three-quarters, they, ceased to be factors, for Best Pal was always far in the rear and finished with a perceptible limp in his left foreleg. Black Servant raced as if short and was sent out to complete a mile and a half in preparation for his starting in the Latonia Championship Stakes next Saturday. He was badly winded on his return to the stand. The usual good Saturday crowd witnessed some interesting sport this afternoon, several of the finishes being of the closest kind, with the winners in doubt until the official placing. The Mose Goldblatt rcprcsentatves were much in the limelight during the afternoon, two of the purses going to members of his stables, and he should have made it a triple, for Wayward Lady was best in the sixth race and failed solely through the bad judgment of her rider, G. Fields. Th latter also figured in a rough riding stunt that should have brought him suspension. IDEAL WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS. Weather and track conditions were superb and contributed extensively to the enjoyment of the big throng. The Florisant Stables Mahony was the delectable morsel in the initial dash, although the Ward-Goose connections had like designs with Gloria France. The latter, however, fell short by thn margin of a neck. Clintonville, the favorite, might have altered the result but for interference she was subjected to by Gloria France in the stretch. Then: was considerable rough riding in the race, Sweet Liberty being almost thrown in the first quarter while in a prominent position. The second race, in which maiden two-year-olds tried conclusions, resulted in a struggle of thre: that had the big crowd electrified, the victory being in doubt until in the last stride, Smiling Lad winning by inches, with Tulane, the favorite, just succeeding in outstaying Cap Rock. The trio dominated the running from the start, there never being irore than a half-length difference between them. Goldblatts representative paid surprisingly large returns. Another thriller came with the finish of the third race, in which an ordinary band met, with Kingfisher the favorite, just getting up to outstay Virgo and Alex Jr. only a nose in back of him. The final contenders began their struggle after straightening away in the stretch run, and the last eighth found them all under hard pressure, with the winner in doubt until in the last stride. The time of the race here, 2:00, denoted a slow performance. INTERFERENCE BEATS BULLET PROOF. Guvnor upset the well-planned intentions of the Bullet Proof connections by beating that racer to the finisli in the fourth race, at three-quarters of a mile. There was doubt in the minds of close observers if Bullet Proof should have been beaten, as he was a frequent sufferer from interference, and the winners disqualification seemed imminent when Parke, Avho had ridden Bullet Proof, made a. complaint to the stewards, but they evidently did not think it sufficient to disqualify Guvnor. It was the latters first start in the colors of Mose Goldblatt, who claimed him from a previous race from F. J. Kelley at a cost of ,100. Gallahcr Brothers Glyn scored a lucky victory in the sixth, in which two-year-old fillies took part exclusively. She began fast and held sway for the entire distance, but won only by a matter of inches from Lina Clark, with Wayward Lady in third place. The latter ran as if much the best and, but for her her rider bringing her extremely wide in the stretch, which lost her the lead, she would have won in easy style. Inability of the rider to ride a strong finish also cost her second place in the last stride. Bernice K.. Omnipotent and Bonus, highly regarded ones in the race, met with iiiierfcrencc, which affected their chances. At that, Bonus ran a bad race. The filial race found Frcccuttcr installed an overwhelming favorite, but he never figured seriously in the running, Tippo Sabib winning from By Golly. The latter was probably best and would have won had Roberts, his rider, given more attention to the business in hand than to trying to retard Tippo Sahib near the end. Matinee Idol Just did beat Legal for third place. Todays visitors included Johnson N. Camden, chairman of the Kentucky State Racing Commission .OontiBued oa lecond pag. FIREBRAND STILL SHINES Continued from first page. and president of the Kentucky Jockey Club. It was his first visit to any track in a long time. The board of handicappers here rate Morvich i and Miss .Toy equals, counting sex allowance, for thev assigned 335 pound to Morvich and 132 to i Miss Joy in the .Fort Thomas Handicap, which will I have its decision on Latonia Championship day "exl Saturday. A. F. Dayton is a -recent arrival from the Canadian circuit and will race the horses in his charge iii Kentucky for the remainder of the racing season. The Dayton horses include War Zone. Mogens, Bill McOloy, Sikhim, Locust Leaves, Voorgeria, Sundo, Harry Maxim, Harp of the North and Swirl. Harry Burgoyne, which Smith Baker campaigned on the Windsor tracks, is back at Latonia. M. Goodpaster arrived this morning with the four-year-old Biddledee. O. A. Bianchi arrived this morning from New-York, where he attended the recent yearling sales and secured the Friar Rock Ashtoreth colt at a covt of 1921.sh,000. The youngster is now en route to Lexington, where he will join the others of the Bianchi-owned colts and be prepared for next years racing. Mr. Bianchi also purchased today the mare Frankness at private sale, intending her for mating with Libyan Sands.
