VANGUARD AT NEW ORLEANS Already About 400 Horses Have Arrived at Jefferson Park and the Fair Grounds. NEW ORLEANS, La., October 31. Horsemen from New York, Maryland, Kentucky and Canada, fearing a possible railroad strike, have been shipping their stables here by the trainload with the result that there are more horses here at this early date than ever before in the history of local racing. A conservative estimate on the number of horses already here at the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park is placed at 100. The track at Jefferson Park is in excellent condition and morning work-outs are on in full swing. Charles Houbre. Clyde Freeman and one or two others have taken advantage of the fine weather and track conditions and have got an early start on their fellow trainers. Both local tracks are badly in need of rain. The Fair Grounds course has just been resurfaced, and is ankle deep in sand. However, this condition is ideal for the training of horses. One good, hard rain will fix everything up in tiptop condition. C. W. Clark, the copper king, intends to send another formidable string down. He is trying to purchase the three-year-old Firebrand, and if he does trainer G. V. Barnes will add Firebrand to the stable, which includes Captain Mac, United Verde and the wonderfully improved colt, White Star. W. K. Burttschell will be on hand with his usual army of horses. Eddie Rickenbachcr, the crack sprinter, tops the list, with Mythology, Midnight Sun, Fort Bliss and about thirty others keeping him company. Old-time favorites who will be back on the job again are. St. Isidore, High Cost, Minute Man, Bunga Buck, Lord Allen, Paradcr, Tableau dHon-neur. Sands of Pleasure, Wadsworths Last, Blackie Daw, My Reverie, Woodtrap, Marvin May, Ma-vourneen.Veto and many others. Among the new blood to be seen here during the winter will be the crack handicap horse Goaler, Gipsy Lad, Santa Claus, Penelope, Carpenter, Balance Wheel, Claymore, Current Events, Armistice, Pastoral, Episode and others. The Canadian stable of Clarence Buxton unloaded at the Fair Grounds Thursday. It will be joined by other branches of the stable. Johnnie Dundee, lightweight boxer, owns about a dozen in the string. Following out, the adage of "the early bird gets the worm," many trainers have lost no time settling in their barns and getting their training activities under way. "Silent Bill" McKinney is among the busiest of these. Ed Trotter, who recently purchased a 30,000 home in New Orleans, is coming with as high classed a string of racers as could be brought together. Among them are High Cost, Wyoming, Wcstwood, Kewpic ONeil, Redmon and niore than a dozen others. Charles Rowe, old time New Orleans horseman, has written for stable room for his small but select string, which includes the redoubtable filly Miss Jemima. Miss Jemima has rounded to top form, and asks no favors from any mans sprinter.
