The victory of Sallys Alley in the Futurity adds another to the romances of the turf and shows that winners of merit oftentimes come from unexpected places. It is this fact that makes the breeding of thoroughbreds the most fascinating pursuit in the world. Clarence H. Mackay of New York bred the Donovan mare Strike-a-Light II. to Meddler in France and the result was a colt he calKd Allumeur, which won some races abrcad. He was brought to this country and sold for a modest sum at the dispersal sale of the Mackay horses which had been brought from France. He was in the stud at Binghamton for a period and was sold at auction for 75, ultimately finding his way to the Federal Remount Service at Washington. "When Sal-volatiles yearling daughter beat twelve seconds for a quarter at the home track Mr. Kilmer tried to persuade the government to sell him the horse. In this he was unsuccessful, but he finally made an arrangement whereby he exchanged Magic II. for Allumeur, and the son of Meddler had some of the best mares at Sun Briar Court this year. The dam of Sallys Alley, Salvolatile, was owned and raced during her early career by E. D. Morgan. She is a daughter of Disguise, the Domino horse that James R. Keene sent to England and ran third in the Derby and won the Eclipse and Champion Stakes. Sallys Alley represents the successful blending of American and English bioca lines and should prove a valuable acquisition to the stud when her racing days are over.
