EARLY ENDURANCF TESTS Rides Fifty-Five and Half Miles in Two Hours and Twenty-Five Minutes. The history of the early development of the horse is replete with incidents demonstrating that both riders and mounts possessed the rare element of bottom. From American Turf Register of 1830 the following is extracted: On May 6, 1819, Joseph Hutcheson, an English horse dealer, undertook to ride from Canterbury to London bridge in three successive hours, distance fifty-five and a half miles. He accomplished it ia two hours twenty-five minutes and fifty-one seconds without any inconvenience to himself. He took refreshment in London and returned to Canterbury by coach .to dine with a party interested in the bet He employed eleven horses and rode for a wager of ,000. John MCracken rode with President Jacksons message, December 8, 1829, from Washington to Baltimore, thirty-six miles, in one hour forty-five minutes.
