RE-ECHOS CAMBRIDGESHIRE . V Outsiders Strong Finish Brings Victory in Newmarket Classic. r Toisoncd Arrow .1 Good Second, with Hasty . Hatch, a Long Shot, Talcing Third Small Tnrnont at English Course. LONDON, England, October 26. Time was when the Cambridgeshire attracted larger throngs than the Cesarewitch. but during recent years the position has come to be reversed, and certainly there was an appreciable drop in the size of yesterdays crowd , at Newmarket, as compared with that at the previous gathering. To some extent j this was due to the spoiling of all "doubles" by Light Dragoons surprising victory in the ; long-distance handicap, and reduced attendances have, of course, been recorded almost everywhere. , The morning again opened bright and fine, if cold, but in this part of the country such conditions almost invariably give way later on to cloudy skies. So it was yesterday, but although it remained dull and cheerless throughout the racing, visitors were spared the discomfort of rain. The sport was enjoyed from start to finish. Fields with scarcely an exception were of satisfactory strength. A DOZEN IN ALL-AGED PLATE. The muster was twelve for the All-Aged Plate, with which racing was resumed, but for this only Desert Rose and Bantry were backed. Preference was given to the former, but this proved a bad error of judgment. Bantry indeed was entitled on all form to greater esteem than the Lambourn filly, but he is rather apt to lose ground at the start, which may be the reason for the laying of such liberal odds against him. Ke made no mistake this time, Jelliss jumping off from the start to make every yard of the running and score a smooth victory. It was amazing, therefore, that a bid of ,000 sufficed to retain the well-bred five-year-old for further - service. The Houghton Handicap presented so difficult a problem that while Plas Newydd was made favorite at 6 to 1 four others were supported at a point longer odds and Len-glen at S to 1. The winner, however, was Bonnie Race, which carried off a handicap over the identical course at the second spring meeting, but which subsequently ran unplaced to Treviso at Doncaster. Chief interest in the Moulton Stakes was centered upon the appearance for the first time in public of Saltash, brother to Buchan and half brother to Tamar. The Man ton colt was expected to run lye-ditably, and the support given him helped to keep the odds demanded about Drake within reasonable limits. Nevertheless it was plain that he hardly understands requirements as yet, and Mrs. Sofar Whitburns good colt sailed home an easy winner from Atirovaf and Kissing Cup, which fought out a close struggle for second place. HUGE FIELD EST CAMBHIBGESIEIIIi:. The field of thirty-four for the Cambridgeshire was practically in accordance with overnight anticipations and, so far as the wagering was concerned, Stratford, Poisoned Arrow and Soubriquet retained their positions at the head of affairs. Stratford, which had been temporarily deposed by Poisoned Arrow, finally started with a fractional call over Major Cayzers colt. Soubriquet was again well backed to confirm her Kempton superiority to Poisoned Arrow and Condover headed the rest. Of last years competitors only the second and third, Leighton and Franklin, and Control entered the lists again. The latter obstinate animal, which was reported not long ago by the Kempton stewards, onco more stood still and, filling Tishys role, received an ironical cheer or two. The start was a perfect one, on which Captain A.lison is to be sincerely congratulated. Monarch, Leighton, Clochnaben, Lady Juror, Re-echo and Poisoned Arrow were among the pioneers for about half a mile, when Re-echo joined Monarch in front of Tremola and Stratford. Sir Henry Birds colt began to weaken at the bushes, at which point Leighton was going so well that his supporters were entitled to take a hopeful view of his prospects. He failed, however, wheh called upon and on came Re-echo, full of run, pursued by Poisoned Arrow. The latter could never draw up on terms, and thus, while he easily took his revenge on Soubriquet, the spoils fell to Sir Ernest Pagets outsider. HASTY MATCH FINISHES THIRD. Third place was filled by the 50 to 1 chance. Hasty Match, carrying the colors borne to victory by Milenko twelve months ago. Clochnaben, Roman Bachelor and the Belgian horse. Lifeboat IL, which ran prominently throughout, all finished in front of Stratford, whose rider declared that the colt refused to exert himself at any part of the race. Apart from the favorite, the greatest disappointments were Soubriquet, Sicyon, Ceylonese and Eaglehawk. The last-named trio did not make the least show. Ceylonese was most confidently supported by his party, and Eaglehawks trainer was sanguine that the son of Spearmint would be placed, yet neither of the pair was ever near the fighting line. The Maiden Two-Tear-Old Stakes, which followed, was won by the favorite, Bessie, after a capital set-to with PombaL The much-fancied Trotcosey was unplaced. There was a still closer finish for the New Nursery, Greenfinch beating Witty by a head in a field of twenty-one. The winner, which had been retained at a good price after carrying off a selling plate at the First October meeting, started in slightly better request than Hillman, with Witty and Compiler their chief market rivals. He was first away, but was headed by Witty at the bushes. Fox, however, never ceased to persevere, and was rewarded by the youngster responding so as to regain the lead with the result named.
