BIG JOCKEY COLONY Riding Material at Oriental Park Rapidly Increasing. R. McDermott and W. Taylor Among the Recent Arrivals Ambrose and Pickens Due. HAVANA, Cuba., November 24. The past few days have witnessed the influx of quite a few jockeys who are engaged to ride during the Oriental Park meeting. Among the number are 11. McDermott, who rode with considerable success at the local course two years ago. He is under contract to John E. Madden, Americas foremost breeder of thoroughbreds, who has permitted the boy to come to Cuba to ride for "W. F. Knebelkamp until February 1, when he will rejoin the Madden stable at Churchill Downs track in Louisville. Willie Taylor, another capable rider will be a newcomer to Cuban racing. He comes here with the reputation of leading the riders at the recent meeting at the Dufferin Park track in Toronto. Taylor is under engagement to ride this winter for E. E. Major. Charles Taylor, familiarly known as "Circus" Taylor, and a veteran rider of note is another valuable addition to the Oriental Park riding colony. He rode with good success at the Maple Heights fall meeting, and will do the saddle work here for Harry Herdel. Dan Pribble, the good apprentice developed at Oriental Park last year, and who finished the meeting second on the list of winning riders, with sixty-six winning mounts, only two behind Penman, the leader, will not return for the coming meeting. The boy received serious injuries when he fell at the Havre de Grace spring meeting, and as a result it is believed his riding days are at an end. Pribble established a riding record at the local track, February 14, of this year, when he rode five of the six winners of that day. His winning mounts were Tatting, Spring Vale, Golden Chance, Au Revoir and Chincoteague. M. J. Daly, whose stable arrived here several weeks ago, is a recent arrival from Maryland. W. J. Daly, another owner whose colors will be carried at the forthcoming meeting, has been detained at his home in Washington by an addition to his family. The newcomer is a baby girl and according to reports received yesterday both mother and child are doing nicely. HAlttlOJilQUE TAKEN VP. The four-year-old chestnut colt Harmo-nique, by Sardanapale Melody, which Frank Weir last spring sold to the Caimito Stable, was yesterday brought to Oriental Park from the ranch by Walter Carter and placed in training. The eighth posts on the Oriental Park track have been painted white with gilt tops and present an improved appearance. Jockeys A. Ambrose and E. Pickens, both veteran riders, arc due to reach Havana in a few days. Pickens is well known here, having ridden at Oriental Park for the last five years. He is under engagament to ride for E. L. Fitzgerald. This will be the first visit of Ambrose to Cuba. He will be under the care of Lee Madison, who is here with a number of horses the property of Edward F. Seagram, the Canadian sportsman. James McLaughlin, the official timer at the lecal course, is a recent arrival from New York. He was accompanied by his son Austin McLaughlin, who rode with considerable success here last year. Hal Stevens, son of the famous caterer, Harry Stevens, of New York, arrived recently from the North. He will again be in charse of the grandstand restaurant and bar. Howard Pearson, for many years sporting editor of the Detroit Journal up to last July, when the newspaper was amalgamated with the News of that city, arrived from his home in Niagara Falls, N. Y. He has been engaged by General Manager Frank J. Bruen as publicity agent for the La Playa Casino and Almandares Hotel. Frank P.acciocco is a recent visitor from his home in St. Petersburg, Fla. For the past six years he has been in charge of the Oriental Park betting ring. This year he will act as superintendent of the clubhouse at the race track.
