NEW YORK RACING OF 1922 As a racing Held New York did not make much improvement in its output of money this year, in comparison with 1921. In fact, the gain for the year was only the modest sum of 7,260. The two major tracks, Belmont Park and Saratoga, showed a combined increase of 587.24, but this was offset by a falling off in disbursements to owners at Aqueduct, Jamaica and Empire City. But the New York tracks in all gave the munificent total of ,918,286, and that is a plenty. The fact is they do about all they can now in money giving, taking into consideration that nearly all their revenue is from admissions to the tracks and that their stockholders arc properly entitled to, at least, a modest annual dividend on their investments in support of racing. The Maryland, Kentucky and Canadian fields have a great advantage over the New York field in their lavish returns from mutuel percentages. It Ls worth observing that in such a near-by year as 1917 New Yorks total distribution to owners was the total of 72,073, a total nearly doubled by that of this year. This spells a vast increase in five years and is greatly more than the owners deserve, although they would grasp more with entire composure and without a particle of thankfulness on the part of their majority. In the five years since 1917 the New York racing field has given to them the enormous total of ,889,398, and that is something to be proud of. Following is a comprehensive analysis of what was done on the New York tracks this year as well as comparative details since and including 1917: v- 3i H 3 O Sg ag a? a? 2. c2 s2 mq 2-g" 1? ?m Ss- Off H H oand Track and Matins. o Sf 3 3 ST f" I" I" S- cj b 3 : c- 2?: a b 2 3 ? 5 ; 7 I ; ; I I I i" Snratosa 27 102 119 200 $ 402.494 C2 42 58 23 19 .38 Relrnout Park Autumn Meeting 19 114 112 224 293.007 45 29 40 27 16 .39 Aqueduct Spring Meeting 19 114 113 220 245.509 53 30 31 19 9 .16 r.clmont Park Spring Meeting 13 78 00 172 222,525 32 21 25 13 9 .41 Jamaica Autumn Meeting 19 114 115 207 190,705 50 34 30 21 10 .44 Umpire City Summer Meeting 19 114 104 199 192.793 44 28 42 17 7 .39 Aqueduct Autumn Meeting 12 72 S 164 127,507 27 20 25 7 8 .37 Jamaica Spring Meeting 12 72 70 142 116,040 32 13 22 12 9 .44 Empire City Autumn Meeting 12 72 S9 145 115,076 38 9 25 15 5 .53 United Hunt Club Autumn Meeting... 1 5 14 15 2.870 3 0 2 2 1- .60 United Hunt Club Spring Meeting 1 5 9 12 2,500 2 3 0 1 3 .40 Totala and Grand Percentage 154 922 ,918,280 388 234 300 157 102 .42 The following table shows in detail the amount distributed by the varions New York racing organizations in the years from 1917 to 1922, inclusive: Organization. 1917. 1918. 1919. 1920. 1921. 1922. It was a stable formidably equipped in all departments four-year-olds and over, three-year-olds and two-year-olds and under Sam Hil-dreths masterly training and guidance returned the imposing total of 29,735 in stable earnings, this despite the fact that the Belmont Stakes, Hopeful Stakes and the Futurity StakesT-the three most valuable races of the New York field fell to other owners. Second in stable earnings was the Maryland owner, J. S. Cosden, with the enviable total of 21,714. H. P. "Whitney was not so fortunate in New York racing as has been his custom in preceding years. Sickness invaded his stable at a critical time and had much to do with this condition, but he brought up in third place with a total by no means to bo despised. R. T. "Wilson fared unusually well in the racing of the Empire State. In Pillory he possessed the most fortunate three-year-old colt of the year, but by no means the best. With him he Avon the Belmont Stakes In its first, year as a 0,000 race, and otherwise fared so well that he finished fourth in the owners list and not far behind Mr. Whitney. It was the Greentree Stables best year in racing and its comfortable total of 4,633 placed it fifth and nearly on an equality with Mr. Wilson. Not far behind the Green-tree Stable was the unselfish sportsman "W. S. Kilmer, with the fleet but homely Futurity winner, Sallys Alley, the principal contributor to his total of ?S3,SG8. His closest followers in order were the Quincy Stable and John 33. Madden. No other owner won as much as 0,000, but R. L. Gerry, Joseph E. Wide-ner, H. C. Fisher, II. Waterson, Riviera Stable, Westmont Stable and W. Daniel found New York racing profitable and amassed pleasing stable earnings.
