PROBLEM IN NEW ZEALAND In New Zealand the law does not permit of more than eight races a day at any meeting, and. with entries so numerous as to make divisious necessary in order to avoid accidents, the position is worrying clubs. In consequence the Wellington Racing Club recently appealed to the Supreme Court for a decision as to whether the running of a race in two heats was a breach of the gaming act. To avoid danger the Wellington Racing Club desired authority to divide a race into two heats, but a second dividend not to be applicable. Toe payment only being made on first horse in each. The solicitor general, in opposing the application, said the scheme suggested was praiseworthy, but was opposed to the meaning of the gaming act. If a course was not sufficiently wide to cope with a large number of horses it should be made adequate. Mr. Justice Reed reserved his decision.
